The Odyssey Doesn’t Have A Post-Credits Scene, But You’ll Regret Leaving Early

[

Christopher Nolan dives headfirst into the fantasy genre to tackle The Odyssey, transforming Homer’s classic Greek poem into a nearly 3-hour R-rated live-action blockbuster. Viewers are transported to “a time of apparent magic,” as the opening title card states, to see Odysseus (Matt Damon) remember his past and venture home to Ithaca, where his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), is fending off suitors and his son, Telemachus (Tom Holland), seeks answers about his father’s fate.

Done through a grand, practical scale, The Odyssey is undeniably an epic cinematic experience. This is especially true if you see it in IMAX 70mm, as Nolan’s movie became the first to be shot entirely with IMAX’s cameras for that format. Even if you can’t make it to one of those in-demand showtimes, the film has become 2026’s biggest theatrical event so far, with most The Odyssey reviews hailing it as the year’s best.

It’s the latest incredible accomplishment in Nolan’s filmography, which spans everything from franchise films to those based on true stories/people to original concepts with vague conclusions. And given where The Odyssey‘s ending leaves audiences, it’d be fair to question if there’s anything in the credits that tease a potential new franchise for Nolan.

Yet, Nolan has never added a credits scene to one of his films, not even when he was helming a Batman trilogy. The Odyssey not having an extra scene during or after the credits should not be that surprising due to his history. But there is another reason to stick around through The Odyssey‘s credits.

Why You Should Stay For The Odyssey Credits

Instead of a tag scene teasing future stories in this world, viewers are treated to some special audio as the film’s credits roll. The Odyssey‘s credits include the debut of an original song made for the movie called “When I’m Home.” It’s performed by Travis Scott, James Blake, and composer Ludwig Göransson. It’s a great epilogue to the epic adventure that allows viewers to sit in this world a bit longer.

Practically every movie includes a song over the credits, whether it’s part of the musical score, a licensed song, or an original tune made for the film. This is true of Nolan’s movies, too, such as using “Analyse” by Thom Yorke during The Prestige‘s credits or having Hans Zimmer’s score play over The Dark Knight‘s credits.

What’s extra special about The Odyssey‘s end credits song is that Christopher Nolan is one of the lyricists. He worked with Göransson, Blake, and Scott to write the lyrics. This becomes Nolan’s first credit as a lyricist. That could be notable in the months ahead, as the director could gain an Oscar nomination if “When I’m Home” is recognized by the Academy Awards voters.

But this is not Scott’s first credits song with Nolan. He and Göransson worked together to make “The Plan” for Tenet. Nolan was so fond of the result that Scott not only got to write and perform “When I’m Home,” but he also got a role in The Odyssey as a bard who retells Odysseus’ conquests.

Does The Odyssey Set Up A Sequel (& Will It Get One)?

Without diving into spoilers, The Odyssey leaves its characters in a place where viewers could wonder if a sequel will happen. The finale brings about several changes to the status quo, and there are hints of a larger, magical world beyond Ithaca that additional installments would be ripe to explore. However, The Odyssey is not directly setting up a sequel with its ending.

That does not mean that one is impossible. Other famous Greek poems extend the story beyond what viewers last see. At this time, there have been no announcements from Universal or Nolan that a sequel to The Odyssey is coming. The movie’s projected box office performance could ignite interest in such a follow-up from Universal’s side.

Considering The Odyssey is not meant to be a franchise starter, though, a sequel can likely be ruled out. Nolan probably would not return to make another entry, and it’d be surprising if any returning cast members would agree to come back without his involvement. Only if The Odyssey had included a surprise post-credits scene would the possibility be more legitimate.
