Ahead of the premiere of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the creators revealed why this latest Big Bang Theory spinoff will lean into R-rated humor.
The upcoming series stars Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom, a role he played for many years on The Big Bang Theory, as he enters the multiverse after causing damage to a piece of technology created by Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will be very different from its predecessors in multiple ways.
Also, for the first time, a show in the Big Bang Theory franchise will be released on a streaming service (HBO Max) instead of on a broadcast network (CBS). As a result, the producers and writers can get away with more adult-oriented humor, as revealed by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn during an interview with CinemaBlend.
Lorre claimed that this change will work in the show’s favor, saying, “The fact that it isn’t anticipated by the audience, I think, is a plus.”
Chuck Lorre: “The fact that it isn’t anticipated by the audience, I think, is a plus. We did The Big Bang Theory, and we’re very proud of it, and may it live long and prosper.”
Instead of making a regular comedy like The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon or Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, the team wanted to incorporate sci-fi and superhero elements to create something fresh that they hadn’t done before.
As Prady said, “A show like this only works if the danger is real, if the peril is real. And if you’re genuinely in danger, the way you talk about it reflects being genuinely in danger.” Penn added, “Also, we like to f***ing swear.“
Bill Prady: “To your point about tone, a show like this only works if the danger is real, if the peril is real. And if you’re genuinely in danger, the way you talk about it reflects being genuinely in danger.”
Zak Penn: “Also, we like to f***ing swear.”
In other words, the premise of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe wouldn’t have worked using a traditional sitcom format; they felt they needed to evolve the franchise into something that felt natural for this particular show.
The hit comedy franchise began with The Big Bang Theory, which debuted in 2007 and aired for 12 seasons with cast members Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch.
Sussman joined the series in season 2 in a recurring capacity before becoming a series regular. After the final episode aired in 2019, the actor went on to appear on shows like The Dropout, Call Me Kat, Better Call Saul and Lessons in Chemistry.
Throughout its run on CBS, The Big Bang Theory was a ratings hit and won multiple awards, including at the Emmys, Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and People’s Choice Awards.
After The Big Bang Theory ended, CBS launched a prequel called Young Sheldon, which aired for seven seasons and starred Iain Armitage as a younger version of Parsons’ fan-favorite character.
Young Sheldon got its own spinoff centering on Montana Jordan and Emily Osment’s characters, Georgie Cooper and Mandy McAllister. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 3 will premiere in fall 2026.
Now Lorre and HBO Max are days away from debuting Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. Aside from Bloom, the show also stars Brian Posehn, Lauren Lapkus and John Ross Bowie.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premieres Thursday, July 23 at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO Max.
