10 Greatest Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Books On D&D Beyond

[

There are some remarkable Dungeons and Dragons adventure books that you can find on D&D Beyond. While the majority of the material available on the platform has been put out by Wizards of the Coast, there are also other great homebrew D&D settings for adventures that have been released as partnered content for players and Dungeon Masters. Several of these adventures can easily fly under your radar, especially due to how dim their spotlight is in comparison to official content.

For example, a new D&D release inspired by Bloodborne has arrived in June, allowing players to take on a gothic horror setting using unique subclasses, species, and even trick weapons, which transform like those in FromSoftware’s souls-like RPG. Even within the realm of official material, there are some adventures that are overlooked and don’t get a whole lot of attention, like Curse of Strahd, Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus, and Vecna: Eve of Ruin.

Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass

One of the best adventures you can currently grab on D&D Beyond is called Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass. Created by 1985 Games, this level 1-10 sourcebook offers players a whole setting inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Studio Ghibli movies. If you’re looking for a whimsical approach to magic and fantasy that isn’t bound to the Feywild or anything fey-related, Obojima is perfection.

In addition to the tons of different character options in the book, Obojima gives players and DMs access to a highly detailed magical world that has tons of roleplaying opportunities, as well as some twists to combat, depending on how encounters are presented. Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is compatible with D&D 5e, and it can be adapted for parties running the latest 5.5e rules, too.

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden

If you’re looking for something a bit darker, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is a great choice. This is an official adventure module put out by Wizards of the Coast. While it may not be as popular as Curse of Strahd, for example, the level 1-12 adventure tells a dark and compelling story taking place in the northern reaches of Faerûn. For the past two years, the god of winter has impeded the sun from rising in the region.

Players will have to investigate the cause of the problems arising in Icewind Dale, while also trying to survive the harsh environment and the even harsher creatures that live in the icy lands. Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden for D&D is also a great stage for roleplaying, as players are encouraged to draw a secret during character creation, which can then be inserted into this frosty campaign.

Dungeons of Drakkenheim

Created by the Dungeon Dudes, in collaboration with Ghostfire Gaming, Dungeons of Drakkenheim is a great dark fantasy setting fit for 5e. The level 1-13 adventure set in this world takes place in an urban-like sandbox, namely Drakkenheim, which gives players a lot of leeway regarding where to go and what to do, as they uncover secrets about what happened to the city after the cataclysm that destroyed it.

Players will be able to engage with factions, and their decisions will influence the fate of the city. For fans of darker themes, including eldritch horror, Dungeons of Drakkenheim is a great setting. The campaigns built in this world are recommended for both experienced players and DMs, but if you do fit that category, it may be one of the best adventures on the D&D Beyond marketplace.

The Wild Beyond the Witchlight

Another great official adventure module from Wizards of the Coast is The Wild Beyond The Witchlight. The book features a level 1-8 adventure that mixes the whimsy and dark of a nighttime circus with a different take on the Feywild. It’s a very well-structured adventure, especially for new DMs, and it’s a great choice if you want to avoid a combat-heavy campaign in D&D.

Because of the nature of the fey, a lot can be handled with words and negotiations. It’s a fantastic setting for roleplaying as you encounter remarkable NPCs, including some well-known characters. This is easily one of my favorite adventures for 5e, and with mini sandbox-like areas, it’s a fine mix between a linear and open campaign.

Tales from the Shadows

Published by Kobold Press, Tales from the Shadows is one of the best partnered content available on D&D Beyond. Like The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, this adventure’s range goes from levels 1 through 8. Additionally, it also has some elements of fey, which can make it an extremely whimsical experience. The book contains 14 adventures, which can be tied into a campaign.

If you’re looking for something that plays like D&D 5e but feels a bit different from the general tone imposed by official materials, Tales from the Shadows is a work of art. With a ton of mysteries to uncover and a plethora of maps to use, it’s a complete package that you may want to consider picking up.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is another great option available in the marketplace. While its name does mention a heist, this level 1-5 adventure book is actually all about political intrigue and an investigation into a murder mystery. The official content book takes place in Waterdeep, one of the most important cities in Faerûn, and as you would expect from a location this rich, there are also tons of factions at work.

This adventure is particularly great for players and DMs who want more focused adventures that take place in a city rather than running around a huge area to solve a crisis. Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is easily one of the best adventure modules in D&D 5e.

Humblewood Campaign Setting

The Humblewood Campaign Setting available on D&D Beyond allows players to progress through a level 1-5 adventure with cozy vibes set in the world of Everden. The adventure technically happens in the forest of Humblewood, and the idea is to have a party of anthropomorphic heroes to save their home.

There are some pretty cool character options, including new subclass options and species, all of which fit the themes of Humblewood. In this adventure, players will have the opportunity to rebuild their communities, create bonds with other inhabitants of the forest, and uncover the mystery behind the fires that plague Humblewood.

Call of the Netherdeep

Created by Critical Role, Call of the Netherdeep is highly regarded as one of the best adventure modules for 5e, and there are plenty of reasons for that. The level 3-12 adventure takes place in Exandria, the same world in which The Legend of Vox Machina and the 100% Mighty Nein TV shows take place, as they are adaptations from the world crafted by Matt Mercer for the original campaigns.

This adventure takes place across several iconic locations on Exandria, and even features an underwater section, which isn’t too common in D&D campaigns. The party of heroes will have constant interaction with another party of NPCs, and it’s totally up to the players if they are to be outward villains or rivals, making for interesting roleplaying dynamics as the story progresses.

The Crooked Moon

The Crooked Moon is a fantastic level 1-13 adventure module for players who want to dive into folk horror. It’s a remarkable option if the adventures in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within don’t satisfy your thirst for this particular type of horror. If you’re playing this campaign, you can expect a lot of creepiness and a general sense of uneasiness at all times. The module also features a system called Fateweaving, which helps tie in characters’ backstories into the campaign.

On D&D Beyond, The Crooked Moon is split into two parts. The first of them features extensive player options, with tons of species, subclasses, backgrounds, feats, and spells, as well as an overview of the campaign setting. The second part contains a bestiary and many details for an adventure set in this campaign. If you prefer, you can purchase the bundle.

Grim Hollow

Lastly, Grim Hollow: Campaign Guide is one of the best modules you can find on D&D Beyond. This book is for players who are eager to dive into a high-stakes dark fantasy world. There are short adventures in this book, but the idea is to be able to build campaigns for whatever level range you prefer. Grim Hollow features very distinct realms and a world turned dark by the death of gods and the presence of cosmic horrors.

Grim Hollow has been adapted to 5.5e, too, allowing players and DMs to take on this dark fantasy world in the latest ruleset. Published by Ghostfire Gaming, this is one of the most beloved settings for a Dungeons and Dragons campaign adventure.
