The release plan for Strange Darling filmmaker JT Mollner‘s next feature is getting fleshed out.
Sony Pictures announced Monday that the creature horror movie Skeletons is set for theatrical release on June 4, 2027. Brie Larson, Kyle Gallner, Daithí Ó Haragáin, Willa Fitzgerald, Ione Skye, John Goodman and Keith Carradine round out the cast for the film that the studio acquired as a package earlier this year in a bidding war out of the European Film Market.
J.J. Abrams serves as a producer on the project. Mollner revised the script that has an initial draft from Brian Duffield and is based on author Philip Fracassi’s short story Fail-Safe.
The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that the story is said to center on a young boy’s relationship with his mother, who is secured in a cage every night.
Skeletons began production last month, and Fracassi took to Instagram to celebrate the occasion after the project’s circuitous path. Fracassi explained that he initially failed to find a publisher for the work that eventually earned praise when it was included in a short story collection. In 2022, Universal Pictures optioned the story, but the option lapsed two years later, at which point Sony prevailed in the bidding war that included Paramount, Warner Bros. and Neon.
“I’m so excited to see this story on the big screen, and can’t wait to visit set next month to take it all in,” the author posted on June 22. “What an amazing journey.”
Mollner wrote and directed Strange Darling, the indie thriller starring Willa Fitzgerald, Gallner and Madisen Beaty that hit theaters in August 2024.
