Marvel Sets Up Matt Murdock’s Replacement For New Daredevil Story

Marvel is about to undergo some major changes across the entire face of the MCU, but while the Multiverse Saga enters its final chapter, street level heroes like Daredevil also have stories that are still unfolding. Matt Murdock has proven one of the most popular characters to appear since Charlie Cox took over the role for Netflix’s Marvel series, Daredevil, back in 2015.

And while there was a rocky period between 2018 and 2022 where the fate of the character hung in the balance, Marvel Studios made the best decision in bringing Cox back, along with his fellow co-star Vincent D’Onofrio, to bring their spectacular iterations of Daredevil and the Kingpin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the wake of the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, however, Matt Murdock is in one of the most precarious positions of his entire vigilante career. Thankfully, there is an abundance of other characters who are primed to step in and help keep the streets of Hell’s Kitchen safe in his absence.

Matt Murdock Was Imprisoned At The End Of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

The Daredevil: Born Again season 2 finale saw Murdock tell the world that he is, in fact, Daredevil, which was an essential move to take down Mayor Wilson Fisk and establish his undeniable credibility as a witness on the Northern Star ship that Fisk ordered to be destroyed. While this plan obviously allowed Matt to get the upper hand and turn the city on Fisk for good, it also had consequences.

While operating as the vigilante known as Daredevil, Murdock has been involved in a number of illegal activities, from committing brutal acts of violence, trespassing on privately owned property, and generally operating with no regard for the law, which he actively upholds as a lawyer in his day job. Yes, this was all in order to keep New York safe, but without supervision or oversight, Murdock’s actions cross a number of lines.

There Are Two Characters Who Could Step In To Help Protect Hell’s Kitchen

Now, at the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, we also saw Luke Cage return home to Jessica Jones, where they embraced with their daughter and presumably chose to step out of the spotlight and focus on their family once again. With that in mind, it seems unlikely that Luke and Jessica will be stepping up to take Daredevil’s place as a protector of Hell’s Kitchen, though they will likely return for a bigger and more focused mission.

However, two characters associated with Matt have minimal attachments and responsibilities, and possess the necessary skills to be able to become a protector for those who can’t protect themselves. They are Danny Rand, aka Iron Fist, and Elektra. The reason that these two could potentially fill in for the Daredevil boils down to the fact that Danny has previously stepped up to lead after the events of The Defenders, and Elektra has literally been Daredevil in the comics.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 Will Reunite Matt Murdock With His Old Allies

Matt Murdock may be locked up, but considering his incredible skills, his position as a hero to the community in New York, and the potential threats that could be coming down the line, it seems highly unlikely that Matt will be spending a considerable amount of time behind bars. And with set photos from Daredevil: Born Again season 3 already confirming the return of Finn Jones and Elodie Yung, it seems like a certainty that there will be a major reunion.

While Elektra had a more morally grey storyline in the Netflix Marvel shows, her return alongside other members of The Defenders team seems to suggest that Elektra may have settled into a more stable routine away from the corrupting influence of The Hand and others. With that, she may be atoning for her own wrongdoings by carrying the Daredevil legacy forward in Matt’s absence in Daredevil: Born Again season 3.
