Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end with season 5, and here are more details about the final season’s episodes.
Paramount+ renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fifth and final season, which wrapped filming at the end of 2025, but it will only consist of 6 episodes instead of the series’ usual 10. Meanwhile, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, which just premiered on Paramount+, will begin to bridge to the stated end of the prequel’s ‘five-year mission’ to lead into the start of Star Trek: The Original Series.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley at Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4‘s press junket, executive producer and co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman offered more clarity on the format of Strange New Worlds‘ fifth and final season. Calling the last 6 episodes “a suite… a set of episodes,” Goldsman says that it’s a “six-episode goodbye” that’s “tonally more singular” than the genre-bending standalone episodes of previous seasons. Read Akiva’s quote below:
Akiva Goldsman: I would say they’re a suite. They’re a set of episodes. I think they are tonally more singular than is typical for us. I think they’re driving towards the obligation that we felt from the beginning of the show, which is how do we deliver the characters that have been with us to their known future, and how do we deliver those characters that we know less or don’t know at all to their futures?
And so, we actually start laying some track for that in four, but really, five is a goodbye. It is a six-episode goodbye. And it’s not solemn, but it is all the colors of goodbye. And it’s rare [that] you get a chance to end a thing. Shows typically get canceled or they have a finale. And [we] got to do it all. And we got the gift of getting to do it over six hours, and I’m tremendously proud.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 may be the series’ boldest experiment in genre yet, as every episode screened for critics is distinct in tone and style. Goldsman’s description of season 5 doesn’t specify a more serialized approach, but the overall arc builds towards a farewell to this era of the Starship Enterprise and crew led by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount).
For its fifth and final season, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has to position its Star Trek: The Original Series legacy characters, like Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), who will join Captain James T. Kirk’s (Paul Wesley) USS Enterprise crew.
Meanwhile, the fates of the characters introduced in Strange New Worlds, like Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) and Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), will be revealed, as will what happens to Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Pike’s First Officer who doesn’t stay on Kirk’s Enterprise.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ series finale will complete Captain Kirk’s TOS crew by adding Thomas Jane as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami as Hikaru Sulu. The last episode is said to be Kirk’s first day as Captain of the Enterprise, so that Strange New Worlds ends where Star Trek literally starts back in 1966.
The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is expected to premiere in 2027 on Paramount+, and it will mark another ending by concluding the decade-long Star Trek run on Paramount+ under executive producer Alex Kurtzman that started with Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. The second and final season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will likely stream on Paramount+ before Strange New Worlds.
Akiva Goldsman and co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers hold out hope for and “stand at the ready” if Paramount+ orders their proposed spinoff about Captain Kirk’s first year on the Enterprise, Star Trek: Year One. Perhaps that will depend on how well Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 does on the Nielsen streaming charts as it boldly starts the journey to where Star Trek began.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 streams Thursdays on Paramount+
