Tom Holland & Jon Bernthal’s R-Rated Punisher Promise Is What Spider-Man: Brand New Day Needs

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will soon swing into theaters and deliver audiences one of the most anticipated movies of 2026. The fourth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spidey run has both moviegoers and comic book fans intrigued by a number of things, including the nature of Sadie Sink’s mysterious character, the identity of the true villain of the movie, and the reason underlying Peter Parker’s evolution in powers.

But one question lingering over Spider-Man: Brand New Day pertains to how Destin Daniel Cretton’s film will handle The Punisher. The gun-toting antihero first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 back in February 1974 and has gone on to become one of Marvel Comics’ most beloved characters. As is often the case when fictional characters reach this level of esteem, fans aren’t afraid to have their voices heard if they deem that a portrayal of The Punisher does not meet their standards or does not reflect who the character is at heart.

Such questions, however, have been largely quiet in the last 10 years since Jon Bernthal stepped into the shoes of Frank Castle. Bernthal first appeared as the character in Season 2 of Daredevil before headlining two seasons of his own Netflix series. Years later, Bernthal appeared again in Daredevil: Born Again and, most recently, spearheaded the Marvel Television special event The Punisher: One Last Kill.

Bernthal’s role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day brings a whole other challenge to the creative team as such a mature, violent, and R-rated character has never featured in such a family-friendly blockbuster before. But recent comments from both Bernthal and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland suggest that the new film may have nailed this particularly challenging portrayal of Frank Castle.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Does “Not Compromise” Frank Castle

In a recent global press conference attended by director Destin Daniel Cretton, producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, and Jon Bernthal, the topic of The Punisher inevitably came up.

In response to a query about how The Punisher will fit into a PG-13 Spider-Man movie, Bernthal offered words that speak to his confidence in the creative team’s achievement of this difficult feat: “I think what we set out to do is to make it believable that The Punisher could walk out of one of those TV-MA shows and onto this set and vice versa. And I think you’re going to get that while also just paying respect to the unbelievable tone of this film and what Destin did.”

Holland also spoke glowingly about how The Punisher makes his leap from TV-MA shows to a PG-13 movie. “It was a real challenge to try and find a way to bring a character that is, for lack of a better word, an R-rated character and put him into our world,” Holland remarked. He argued that the movie doesn’t “compromise” Castle in any way.

Brand New Day Is Set To Avoid A Problem Other Movie Crossovers Have Suffered With

Bernthal and Holland’s comments are promising for anyone who has concerns about The Punisher’s translation into a more family-friendly outing. It appears that Bernthal, Holland, and the entire creative team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day were well aware of the potential pitfalls associated with bringing The Punisher into a Spider-Man movie, namely that it may tone the character down and, in turn, distance the portrayal from the true nature of the beloved antihero.

Bernthal and Holland speak of the attention to tone that will prove critical in translating The Punisher to this new landscape. Both actors are vocal proponents of their respective characters and speak passionately about depicting their Marvel Comics heroes on-screen in a way that honors the fans.

After hearing what Bernthal and Holland had to say about The Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, confidence is higher than ever that the new Spidey film will avoid problems that plagued other, similar movies. Alien vs. Predator, for instance, suffered as a result of putting two iconic, vicious creatures, known for their bloodthirsty kills, in a PG-13 movie, so much so that the sequel Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem made it a key fixture of its promotional campaign that the movie has an R-rating.

This same issue negatively impacted Terminator: Salvation, Live Free or Die Hard, The Expendables 3, and numerous other movies that erroneously tamed down R-rated characters and subject matter to make them appropriate for a PG-13 rating.

Much uncertainty still surrounds Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland’s recent comments offer encouragement that The Punisher will retain his gritty, hard edge in a PG-13 setting and subvert the issues that hindered the aforementioned movies.
