Star Trek EPs “Stand At The Ready” For Strange New Worlds Captain Kirk Spinoff

[

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ creators and crew are ready to get back aboard the Starship Enterprise if Paramount+ greenlights their proposed spinoff, Star Trek: Year One.

Last year, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds executive producers and co-showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers revealed their hopes to make a new TV series about the first year of the USS Enterprise led by Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). Star Trek: Year One would bring back most of Strange New Worlds’ cast and personnel behind the scenes in a 21st century spin on the original 1960s Star Trek.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley at Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4‘s press junket, Akiva Goldsman remains “hopeful endlessly,” but confirmed that “there are no plans that we know of” for Star Trek: Year One. However, they “stand at the ready” if Paramount+ calls with a green light. Goldsman says, “Everybody on the Strange New Worlds team would be thrilled to come play again.” See Akiva’s quote below:

Akiva Goldsman: I think I can say, on behalf of Henry and myself, that we’re hopeful endlessly. There are no plans that we know of, [but] what we all say, and we mean it, is we stand at the ready. Everybody on the Strange New Worlds team would be thrilled to come play again. But not until they call us do we go back to the sandbox.

Henry Alonso Myers assures us that they have “a million ideas” for Star Trek: Year One, but he looks back with pride at their five seasons of Strange New Worlds while remaining hopeful like Goldsman:

Henry Alonso Myers: Well, there are a million ideas that we have for the show, but obviously… We love Star Trek. We loved working on the show. We’d love to continue working on it. Like I said previously, it’s a fancy car that we got to drive around in for a while. We handed it off to the next people. We’d be happy to take another spin if that’s something that they believe that we should do.

Goldsman and Myers’ comments echo Paul Wesley, their prospective leading man as Captain Kirk in Star Trek: Year One. Last month, Wesley told the audience at FanX Comic Con in Indiana that they “always talk about how we would love to do a spinoff” and “if we get the phone call, we’ll do it.”

Paramount+ canceled their entire slate of Star Trek TV series, with the final seasons of Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy already filmed and expected to premiere in 2027. After that, endless questions abound regarding Star Trek’s TV future. Consensus seems to be that Paramount Skydance plans to put Star Trek on hiatus and focus on feature films before a TV relaunch.

Not helping matters in regard to Star Trek: Year One is that Strange New Worlds‘ USS Enterprise sets in Toronto have been torn down, with pieces auctioned off. Previously, it was thought that a spinoff could simply refurbish the existing sets and launch into production with the same crew and cast (mostly). Currently, there are no Star Trek TV series in production or greenlit for the first time since 2017.

If Star Trek: Year One does happen, Captain Kirk’s original series crew, including Ethan Peck’s Mr. Spock and Celia Rose Gooding’s Nyota Uhura, will be rounded out by the additions of Thomas Jane as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami as Hikaru Sulu. Both are slated to appear in the series finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

In the meantime, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 will build towards the fifth and final season to complete the prequel’s ‘five-year mission’ to sync with the beginning of Star Trek: The Original Series. Season 4 will continue James T. Kirk’s evolution into the future Captain of the Enterprise, testing his command chops and even his decision to sacrifice fatherhood for Starfleet.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.
