Nearly a decade and a half after its premiere, Rick and Morty remains the crown jewel of Adult Swim. The premier adult animation bloc has invested a lot in the interdimensional adventures of Rick Sanchez and his grandson, first giving the series a staggering 70-episode renewal in 2018 and more recently following that up with another two-season order, keeping things rolling through 2029. Creator Dan Harmon is also working on the duo’s first proper movie, which series veteran Jacob Hair will direct and is inspired by the adventurous feel of Indiana Jones. For once, though, the attention is about to be taken off the duo and on Rick’s rival, the President of the United States.
At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the first-ever proper spin-off of Rick and Morty, titled President Curtis, was announced, returning Keith David to his role as the eccentric Andre Curtis for his own otherworldly adventures. One year later, the series is about to premiere, and it now has its own dedicated panel at the convention, bringing the cast and creative team together to discuss the sort of business the POTUS is about to handle with his advisors. Together with his new chief of staff, Banks (Stephanie Beatriz), and Special Agent O’Doyle (Jim Rash), he’ll tackle interdimensional diplomacy, investigations into paranormal phenomena, and other crises beneath the calling of Rick and Morty. Although his first term hasn’t even begun, confidence is evidently high that this president is one that voters will definitely approve of.
Adult Swim announced during the President Curtis panel that the spin-off has officially been picked up for a second season and production has already begun. Earlier season renewals and multi-season orders aren’t entirely unheard of, but it speaks to how bullish the network is about how this expansion of the Rick and Morty world will fare under Harmon and co-creator James Siciliano. In an official statement, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen hyped up the series as a crowd-pleaser with the same brand of creativity that has made the mothership series so successful.
“President Curtis quickly proved himself worthy of another term! With Keith David’s inimitably endearing performance and the creativity of Dan, James and the entire show team, this series and this President are what the people need more of — even if they don’t know it yet.”

Harmon has personally described the difference between Rick and Morty and President Curtis like comparing “Doctor Who and The X-Files.” Very little is known about what Season 2 could entail, aside from the returning creators and the same main trio of David, Beatriz, and Rash, but a brief description teased it’ll keep a very similar feel. It’ll continue following Curtis and his team as they’re presented with entirely new cryptid threats and increasingly out-there sci-fi missions, all while making some unexpected allies along the way. Considering the trailer for Season 1 saw the president zapping Mothman, laying siege to sharknados, fighting off a cyborg attack, and unleashing Knight Rider‘s Kit from the U.S. armory, anything’s on the table for his next official mission.
