Netflix Just Released K-Drama’s Answer To The Witcher

The Witcher is one of Netflix’s biggest fantasy shows to date, but the streaming giant just quietly released its perfect replacement. Inspired by the book series of the same name, The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, a genetically modified human raised to fight fearsome creatures as the eponymous monster hunter. While the dark fantasy’s debut season earned mixed reviews, the second and third installments were far more acclaimed. Sadly, following season 4’s major cast shake-up and divisive creative decisions, The Witcher’s reputation is at an all-time low. Thankfully, fantasy fans now have a prime alternative on Netflix: The East Palace.

In place of Geralt, the K-drama’s protagonist is Gu-cheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), a ghost slayer who prefers to keep himself isolated from society. After the King of Joseon (Cho Seung-woo) abducts him, however, the hunter is forced to rely on his supernatural powers to investigate the long-kept secrets of the palace and vanquish lingering vengeful spirits.

The East Palace even has a Ciri equivalent: just like Geralt’s Law of Surprise reward, Saeng-gang (Roh Yoon-seo) is a princess with mysterious magical abilities. Unfortunately, Saeng-gang’s power to communicate with spirits ends up ostracizing her, to the point where she spends most of her life hiding her royal lineage and living as a simple lady of the court. Once the ghost hunter arrives, though, the King summons Saeng-gang to act as Gu-cheon’s companion. Furthermore, Saeng-gang fulfills a similar role to Yennefer, especially as the series gradually explores her tragic past.

Whereas The Witcher‘s medieval backdrop sometimes clashes with its political overtones and a wavering monster-of-the-week structure, The East Palace mainly revolves around easily accessible themes like greed, grief, and the potentially deadly political intrigue of a Joseon-era palace. The drama is only bolstered by its strong special effects, and each spirit is distinguished by a uniquely terrifying design and backstory. Truly, whether you love the small details or prefer to grasp the big picture, The East Palace‘s perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is irrefutably deserved.

The East Palace Is Among The Best Fantasy Shows Of 2026 So Far

The familiar aspects of the premise may initially intrigue viewers, but The East Palace has its own charms to keep the audience captivated. Despite the genre’s growing popularity, worldbuilding in fantasy shows is still notoriously difficult. The East Palace not only hits the ground running with a crystal clear identity; it creates two enthralling settings in the form of the real world and the Realm of Gwi. With double the stakes, the K-drama flawlessly unfurls its overarching narrative bit by bit, perfectly pacing its twists and major reveals to keep the viewer glued to the screen until the very end.

If you only ever watch one K-drama in your life, let it be one with such masterful acting, stunning cinematography, and genuinely gripping story beats. Although Netflix still has countless Korean titles dropping in the second half of 2026, it’s unlikely any will come close to The East Palace‘s singularly enrapturing fantasy world.
