Lanterns is HBO’s upcoming DCU TV series created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. Honor Guard veteran — or still in Corps training?
The upcoming DCU series Lanterns is bringing two of DC Comics’ most iconic Green Lanterns to live-action and embracing the qualities that made them stand out on the page. In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Lanterns co-creator and comic book writer King explained that Chandler (Hal) and Pierre (John) capture the spirit of their comic book counterparts that generations of fans have come to know and love.
Instead of just adapting a generic version of these characters, King said the creative team behind Lanterns focused on the very first iterations of Hal and John. He explained how they made an effort to preserve the very distinctive personalities and other qualities that comic book writers and artists had established decades ago. Their origins played a significant role in shaping how both Green Lanterns were written for the screen.
According to King, Hal’s backstory goes all the way back to the Silver Age of comics. The character was created in 1959 by John Broome, Gil Kane, and Julius Schwartz. Kane based Hal’s appearance on Paul Newman. King said seeing Chandler step into the role immediately reminded him of the original iteration of the superhero, adding that the actor naturally possesses the same charm and chaotic energy that has become synonymous with the character.
John’s comic book origins, on the other hand, are very different. The creator explained that the iconic artist Neal Adams, who co-created the character, helped redefine the superhero genre with John. This specificGreen Lantern was a very complex superhero. He was strict and disciplined from many years with the Marine Corps. However, he is also an artistic architect. And King believes that Pierre’s performance perfectly captured the essence of the character.
Lanterns will be released on August 16, 2026, on HBO and Max.
