‘You can literally fix anything if you watch enough YouTube’: I met with tech repair experts and campaigners to learn how to fix my broken gadgets — and why it’s so important


Torn ear tips. Snapped charging case. Dented drivers. Like every other kind of gadget imaginable, the best headphones aren’t built to last, and I’d wager that everyone reading this article has some skeletons (of old, ailing gadgets) in their (metaphorical) closet.

In fact, according to a European Union report, in 2024, 51% people kept their old smartphones even though they were no longer using them, and 34% were still holding onto their outdated laptops and tablets. We just don’t know what to do with our old kit.
