6 Years Later, Star Wars Finally Makes Glup Shitto Official Canon

Star Wars is one of the most popular sci-fi franchises ever, and it’s only natural that it has accumulated as many memes as it has in almost half a century of being situated at the height of popular culture fandom, even if the concept of memes itself is relatively new. Star Wars’ best memes include the use of General Grievous’ “This will make a fine addition to my collection” line, Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala format, and Admiral Ackbar’s “It’s a trap” line.

Star Wars has been leaning into its fandom’s meme content lately, particularly with Darth Jar Jar being more ubiquitous than fans might’ve predicted, even if this theory still isn’t canon with Jar Jar Binks revealed to have been a Sith Lord. That said, another beloved meme has, in fact, just become official Star Wars canon, and it’s somewhat bewildering that it would ever be addressed at all.

Star Wars Acknowledges Its Best Meme In The Funniest Way

As per Twitter/X user Star Wars Holocron, the Mandalorian and Grogu movie features the name ‘Glop Shdo’ in Dishabesh on an advertisement for a gladiator prize fight. And, as Star Wars’ Wookieepedia speculates, Glop Shdo appears to be depicted as the human gladiator who battles Rotta the Hutt, marking this character’s authentic debut in the Star Wars universe.

To many general audiences, this character will be wholly unremarkable and unmemorable. However, to Star Wars fans who are plugged into the fandom’s greatest memes, Glop Shdo is a revelation. Indeed, there’s nothing that a name like ‘Glop Shdo’ could be besides a hilarious and explicit reference to fans’ ‘Glup Shitto’ meme, and it’s brilliantly executed.

Glup Shitto is an amusingly crude name that fans have started to give random, unnamed background characters (or even characters whose names fans fail to remember or pronounce properly) who appear in Star Wars, typically aliens who have a distinct or peculiar look and have no lines. Glup Shitto can be anybody, with the name itself meant to poke fun at the common conventions for how Star Wars characters are named, and it’s a term of endearment more than anything.

Will We Ever See Glop Shdo Again?

Considering that it took this long for anyone to discover this Easter egg in The Mandalorian and Grogu, there’s an incredibly low likelihood that we’ll ever see or hear from Glop Shdo in any future Star Wars projects, unless Star Wars has decided that it hasn’t embraced the meme for long enough. Still, it would be hysterical if Star Wars made Glop Shdo a running gag in-universe, too, perhaps with the character being featured in various advertisements, bounty posters, and propaganda media if fans care to look closely enough.

‘Glup Shitto’ is one of the rare Star Wars memes that nobody might’ve expected to see made canon somehow, and it’s interesting to imagine what other popular meme Easter eggs may have gone unnoticed lately. If Star Wars: Starfighter possesses the same humor and levity that Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy’s iconic team-ups are known for, though, the upcoming Star Wars movie will be our best bet to see more memes adapted.
