Released back in November 2024, offering fans the chance to play the first open-world Star Wars game, Star Wars Outlaws takes us to the period of time between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The story follows Kay Vess, a scoundrel who finds herself in deep water with a crime syndicate. As such, the only way she can escape her debt is to assemble a team and take part in a daring heist.
Despite receiving generally favorable reviews at launch, the opinion on Star Wars Outlaws has changed over the years, with many players criticizing its bugs and unpolished state. Not only that, but thanks to a competitive release window and an expensive development budget, Ubisoft later revealed that it had not reached its sales targets.
Now, almost two years on, Star Wars Outlaws is back in the spotlight thanks to none other than PlayStation itself as now, players can get their hands on the open-world Star Wars title for free. PlayStation users can download Star Wars Outlaws for free, even without the need for a PlayStation Plus subscription, courtesy of PlayStation demos.
Offering up to three hours of gameplay, players will be able to get a feel for the game by diving into its main mission and side quests, as none of the game’s content will be locked behind this demo. Put simply, you will need to get as much done as possible in the three-hour window. Once you have completed the first mission, you will gain access to the entire map, and here you can run wild with quests, random encounters, and even partake in a spot of space travel.
In our review, we called Star Wars Outlaws “a stunning depiction of scum and villainy”, rewarding the Massive Entertainment RPG a score of 8 out of 10.
While Star Wars Outlaws does have its pacing issues and there are moments where it feels restrictive, for the most part, it is still an enjoyable open-world experience to dive into. It’s definitely one of the more in-depth insights into and excellent explorations of the scoundrel side. How Kay Vess’ story plays into the wider franchise is yet to be seen, but with some major revelations in the final part of the game, there are bound to be some exciting consequences going forward from this excellent first adventure.
So, if you are yet to get your hands on Star Wars Outlaws, or you were put off by some of its more negative reviews, you can now make up your mind for yourself, and without spending a single penny. If you own a PlayStation 5, simply head to the PS Store, search for Star Wars Outlaws and download the free demo, or you can find it here. Happy spacefaring!
