Instead of dwelling on loss, it focuses on what comes after it, giving Holland the first live-action Spider-Man who truly feels like he has grown into the role rather than still trying to find it.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Reaches The Era Maguire And Garfield Never Did
Maguire and Garfield simply never got the chance to reach this level of maturity. With studios abruptly pulling the plug on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3, both of those arcs were cut off right before their respective heroes could step into a true veteran era. Brand New Day finally explores that next chapter, showing a Spider-Man who has learned from his mistakes, found his footing, and no longer needs someone else to point him in the right direction.
While it would have been nice to see more of the street-level stuff in action rather than slow-motion clips, Brand New Day definitively proves this gritty direction was the right call. Now that the lingering heartbreak surrounding MJ’s memory wipe has been officially sorted out, the board is wiped completely clean. The franchise finally has a fully realized, independent Spider-Man ready to take on the absolute worst of New York’s criminal underworld, and the setup for the next chapter is flawless.
