Silo Season 3 Has Quietly Teased The Algorithm’s Real Identity

This article contains major spoilers for Silo season 3’s episode 6.In season 2, Apple TV’s Silo expanded its sci-fi lore and revealed that even the leading forces of Silo 18 were being governed by a seemingly automatic presence called the Algorithm. Everything from its calculative approach to its seemingly omniscient surveillance seemingly suggested that it was less of a human authority figure and more of artificial intelligence.

The ease with which it overrides the decisions of some of the most powerful forces in Silo 18 and even stays one step ahead of everyone hints at its lack of human traits. Even its lack of empathy towards the Silo’s people and willingness to wipe them out through the Safeguard procedure suggests that the Algorithm cannot be human.

However, in Silo season 3, this narrative seems to be shifting. Many new revelations surrounding the Algorithm seem to suggest that there is more to it than meets the eye. While only time will reveal its true nature and identity, some early clues suggest that it is far more human than it actually seems.

The Algorithm In Silo Is Clearly A Human Disguised As AI

The Algorithm only became a significant part of the story in Silo season 2’s ending arc. During Silo season 2, it seemed to rely heavily on statistics and data-driven decisions, suggesting it lacked the ability to reason like a human. In season 3, however, it has shown everything from hesitation to spite.

Instead of merely giving one-dimensional, data-driven advice to characters like Camille, the Algorithm has adjusted demands based on personal offense and even planned authoritarian plots against characters. It has even displayed the ability to trick characters and manipulate them to walk into a trap.

For instance, in season 3’s episode 6, The Algorithm convinces Juliette it is giving her a chance to save her people by allowing her to send Lukas Kyle and Patrick Kennedy to Silo 17.

While the Algorithm can still be an extremely advanced form of AI, its ability to make complex political decisions to neutralize Juliette as a threat while keeping Camille compliant suggests that it is nothing like the AI we know in the real world. Interestingly, subtle clues in the show might have already given away the identity of the person behind the Algorithm.

Silo Season 3 Episode 6’s Ending Almost Confirms Who’s Behind The Algorithm’s Voice

Silo season 3 has been going back and forth between the present and the past timelines. In a few sequences, the show has cleverly featured match cuts where Daniel Keene is shown in the past timeline directly after the present timeline centers on the Algorithm. This is one of the biggest clues that has seemingly hinted at how Daniel might be the man behind the Algorithm’s voice.

In a previous episode, Keene even met Senator Thurman, who recalled his time with the Army Corps of Engineers and appreciated his work on a drill that helped dig underground without disturbing the soil on the surface. Silo season 3’s episode 6 perfectly followed this up with a scene in which Senator Thurman welcomes Daniel and Helen to the overarching conspiracy by saying,

“How’d you like to help save the world?”

The episode ends here, but it seems evident that Daniel eventually became an active part of the Silo conspiracy and seemingly used his political, military, and architectural knowledge to help with their construction and future governance.

Perhaps, Daniel’s political background explains why the Algorithm has been so strategic in granting a humanitarian concession while privately setting up a lethal trap. Many clues and plot developments seem to suggest that Daniel Keene is the voice behind the Algorithm. What remains a mystery, though, is what made the character lose his humanity and become an authoritarian figure.

In Silo season 3’s past timeline, he seems to be one of the better characters with a good sense of morality. Owing to this, if he is actually the voice behind the Algorithm, why is he willing to sacrifice the lives of so many innocent people in the name of serving a perceived greater good? Not to mention, since the present unfolds over 300 years after the past timeline, how is Daniel even alive? Is he a mere AI projection or an actual human?
