Callum Turner’s New R-Rated Dystopian Movie Extends Rotten Tomatoes Streak After 6 Years

[

Audiences are loving Callum Turner‘s new movie.

The British actor, who is now married to pop singer Dua Lipa, is quickly becoming one of the busiest actors in Hollywood. After joining the Harry Potter universe as Theseus Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts movies, Turner followed up with leading roles in projects like The Boys in the Boat, Eternity, and Masters of the Air. While the star has been embroiled in James Bond casting rumors, he is currently the romantic lead in Universal’s new dystopian movie, One Night Only.

The rom-com has a Purge-like premise with a genre twist, as two strangers who live in an authoritarian America where premarital sex is illegal except for one day. One Night Only reviews were mostly mixed, with criticism towards the underwhelming and safe exploration of the Sex Purge concept, the humor falling flat, and the ending being anti-climactic. The one positive note is the zany chemistry between Turner and Monica Barbaro, but the movie landed a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 123 reviews.

On the contrary, moviegoers have responded more positively to One Night Only. Whereas critics thought the rom-com lacked laughs, audiences found it charming and even appreciated the lesson about true love. As a result, One Night Only is seeing a favorable reception among casual viewers, with a high 72% audience score and a B+ CinemaScore.

All of Turner’s movies since 2020’s EMMA have earned “fresh” audience scores, and One Night Only is the latest to extend that streak to seven movies. Projects like The Last Letter From Your Lover (79%) and The Boys in the Boat (96%) also split critics and audiences, with the latter showing more approval. Meanwhile, Rosebush Pruning and Atropia don’t have an official Popcornmeter.

Despite stronger audience reception, One Night Only will make roughly $6 million during its opening weekend. It’s not expected to perform at the same heights as Anyone But You, which was also directed by Will Gluck, since The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day continue to dominate the box office. In addition, the 2022 rom-com benefited from the holiday push.

Nevertheless, even if One Night Only experiences a modest box office, it could still see success on streaming thanks to the strong audience approval. As of writing, Universal has yet to announce when the movie will land on streaming.

Meanwhile, Turner’s slate of movies has clearly been winning over audiences in the last six years, and it’s expected to continue with his future projects. The British actor is currently filming the remake of the cult horror Possession, alongside Margaret Qualley and Paul Dano. He will also reunite with Apple TV for the long-awaited adaptation of William Gibson’s 1984 novel Neuromancer, in which he portrays the lead character Case. The cyberpunk series will premiere on January 22, 2027.

One Night Only is now playing in theaters.
