While there are a lot of games like Stardew Valley (perhaps too many, if you ask me), there are surprisingly few like Fable. The legendary RPG from developer Lionhead Studios combined robust life sim elements with exceptionally British humor, great combat, and moral choices that never felt binary. It has always been an immensely ambitious series, and while that understandably has put a lot of developers off attempting to replicate its success, it should also inspire others to dare to best it.
Fortunately, one developer has attempted such a seemingly impossible feat. Combining the very best elements of Fable with the visuals and gameplay stylings of Stardew Valley, this massive, extremely ambitious, and endlessly enjoyable life sim sandbox RPG proved to be a smash-hit when it released on PC, and is now garnering incredible reviews from critics and fans alike on consoles. While we all await more information on the official upcoming Fable, this Fable-like will absolutely suffice.
Fable Plus Stardew Valley Is A Perfect Blend
Fable is already basically Stardew Valley with swords. I mean, that’s a tad over-generalizing, as there is obviously a lot more to Fable than farming and romancing (and a lot more to Stardew Valley too), but its life sim aspects are what made it such a household name when it first released. While it absolutely was not the first life sim title, its merging of traditional RPG mechanics with a fairly ambitious world that felt alive and responded naturally to your decisions was revolutionary for the time, and remains extraordinary today.
All of this is to say that a Stardew Valley-esque game like Fable makes sense, as the two were basically already paired long before Eric Barone began developing his magnum opus. However, few developers were really up for the task, and considering Fable’s original developer shut down in 2016, it felt like we’d never get anything else like it. Fortunately, two former Lionhead Studio alumni, Charlton Edwards and Neal Whitehead, formed PixelCount Studios, with the express purpose of making a spiritual successor to Fable.
Together (and with many other developers), they created Kynseed, a 2D pixel-art game that feels a lot like Stardew Valley with all the trimmings and trappings one would expect from a Fable-like. It’s got a huge open world to explore, the ability to buy and manage your own businesses, a very British sense of humor, farming, child-rearing, marriage, combat, a narrative, a legacy mechanic that lets you play as your children, and so, so much more.
Kynseed is a huge game that feels like the ultimate upgrade from Stardew Valley, at least for those who wish the farming sim had a little more monster whacking. However, the sticking point was that PixelCount’s masterpiece was trapped on PC where it had, admittedly, enjoyed a rather successful Early Access period and a bountiful supply of extremely positive reviews. Fortunately, it has finally left the nest and has made its way to consoles.
You Can Check Out Kynseed On Console Now
Kynseed has actually been around for an extremely long time, which is what makes its console launch so special. It was released into Early Access on Steam back in November 2018, where it started as a small, yet nevertheless still incredibly ambitious project that has been expanded upon significantly since. While the price has changed quite a bit since it first came out (I still remember it costing just $9.99), so too has the amount of content, as aforementioned.
Despite launching into 1.0 back in 2022, Kynseed only just released on consoles. On August 4, it dropped on the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, making it accessible to everyone. The console version comes with every major update the PC version has gotten thus far, and will continue getting the major updates still being released. Frankly, I’m just happy to see this amazing spiritual successor to Fable finally be available across all platforms so that cozy game fans, RPG-lovers, and British humor enthusiasts can finally immerse themselves in yet another expansive sandbox.
