Gary Oldman’s $242M Sci-Fi That Prime Video Is Rebooting Returns As Global Streaming Sensation

A sci-fi movie starring Gary Oldman is gaining traction.

The $242 million movie that’s being rebooted by Prime Video has returned as a worldwide streaming sensation. Oldman’s movies and TV shows include a number of high-profile films, from his role as Commissioner Jim Gordon in The Dark Knight Trilogy to his ongoing lead role as Jackson Lamb in Apple TV’s Slow Horses. He’s also no stranger to the sci-fi genre, having played a major role as the villainous Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in The Fifth Element, as well as the main human antagonist, Dreyfus, in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

But one movie for which he’s been almost entirely forgotten is the 2014 reboot of RoboCop. Pulling from the story of the original 1987 sci-fi classic, the remake stars Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, a police detective who is turned into the cyborg officer following an accident that leaves him near death’s door. As he works with OmniCorp to hunt down criminals, he becomes privy to a conspiracy surrounding the company itself. Oldman stars as Dr. Dennett Norton, OmniCorp’s chief scientist who creates RoboCop and takes a liking to him as the film progresses.

RoboCop Remake’s Global Streaming Resurgence Is A Great Sign For Prime Video’s Reboot Series

Now, Paramount+ reports that the 2014 reboot of RoboCop is one of the most popular movies in the world on the platform. According to data from August 11, 2026, the movie is Number 5 worldwide, scoring high on multiple Top 10 lists across the globe. Its highest ranking is Number 5 in 14 different countries, including Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Salvador, and Venezuela. The movie’s sudden surge in ranking proves there’s a global audience who like the modernized retelling, which is a good sign for the franchise’s future.

As of writing, Prime Video is developing a RoboCop TV show rebooting the franchise. Peter Ocko serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, while Blumhouse Atomic Monster joins Amazon MGM Studios as a core production company. Although the reboot is still in development, the movie is proof that there’s a rather large audience keen on seeing more from the franchise. Not only that, but it’s a global phenomenon as well, which further proves the upcoming Prime Video reboot will have plenty of viewership when it arrives.

However, RoboCop 2014 isn’t available to stream on Paramount+ in the United States, its popularity coming entirely from an international audience. Luckily, US viewers can still watch the reboot on a different streaming service. Following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, 2014’s RoboCop became available to stream on Prime Video in the US. All three of the original movies are also available on the platform. It’s a streamlined way to see any version of the story one desires, with the latest remake being of heightened priority.

Given how well RoboCop is performing internationally, it seems like there’s going to be a pretty big audience once Prime Video releases their updated version in TV show form. Although Oldman won’t be leading the charge for the upcoming remake, the movie he does star in has a sleek, modern feel that could signal what to expect from the franchise moving forward.
