Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Brand New Day
There was very little doubt that Spider-Man: Brand New Day would become a major box-office hit. After all, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is one of the most popular characters in the MCU, with the character of Spider-Man himself being one of the most popular superheroes of all time. Even so, the movie’s record-breaking performance at the box office thus far is truly on another level, as it could very well surpass 2019’s Avengers: Endgame by the time its run concludes (it already had a better opening weekend than the 2019 Avengers film).
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is clearly on its way to being an Endgame-level phenomenon at the box office, but why? It’s currently on track to outperform its predecessor, Spider-Man: No Way Home, a truly remarkable feat considering the third MCU Spider-Man movie had both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men and several of their villains for a generation-spanning experience. Nevertheless, Brand New Day broke a billion dollars in less than a week, having already earned over $1.7 billion at the global box office (No Way Home ended its run around $1.9 billion).
Keeping that in mind, here are eight major reasons why Spider-Man: Brand New Day is becoming an Endgame-level box-office success and why earning over $2 billion is absolutely in sight by the end of its record-breaking run.
Spider-Man’s Brand Is As Big As The MCU Itself
Spider-Man is one of the biggest superheroes of all time alongside Batman and Superman. While the MCU has allowed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man to exist in a universe filled with Marvel heroes just like on the page, Spider-Man would arguably be just as much of a global hit if he weren’t in the MCU. Spider-Man’s brand and popularity as a singular hero is just as big (if not bigger) than the entire MCU itself.
Keeping that in mind, an MCU Spider-Man will always do well at the box office, especially one whom audiences have seen grow and develop over the last decade. It’s been proven that casual mainstream audiences will show up for Spider-Man movies, regardless of their investment in the MCU. The shared universe connections serve as the incredible cherry on top, but Spider-Man’s popularity would exist independently from it as well. By putting Spider-Man and the MCU together and maintaining the franchise as Marvel Studios and Sony have been, it’s no wonder Brand New Day is making Endgame money.
Spider-Man: No Way Home Made Brand New Day A Must-See Event
No Way Home made just under $2 billion worldwide during the pandemic era, a true phenomenon in its own right. Additionally, No Way Home’s ending plays a key factor in Brand New Day’s success, as it saw Peter Parker forced to make a major sacrifice to stabilize the world from multiversal catastrophe. Doctor Strange’s spell made everyone forget Peter Parker ever existed, including his loved ones.
Such a massive character-shaking ending practically guaranteed that the inevitable follow-up to No Way Home would be a must-see Spider-Man film, allowing audiences to finally see Peter Parker grappling with his tragic new status quo and how he manages to move forward. Naturally, Brand New Day gives us exactly that, and the execution is impeccable.
Street-Level Over MCU Multiverse Has Big Appeal Right Now
Unlike No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day crucially doesn’t revolve around the multiverse, instead providing a more grounded street-level Spider-Man story in New York many fans have wanted from Holland since his debut back in 2016.
By no means is the MCU’s multiverse inherently bad. Projects like No Way Home, Loki, and Deadpool & Wolverine have all demonstrated just how entertaining the concept can be when Marvel has strong execution behind it. The problem is that there are plenty of other MCU projects that have not been as well done nor universally well received, leading many to grow pretty tired of the multiverse concept overall.
Keeping that in mind, Spider-Man: Brand New Day being street-level was more than likely a refreshing chance of space for longtime MCU fans while also being more accessible for mainstream audiences in general.
A New Spider-Man Era With A New Director
Taking over from the Home Trilogy’s Jon Watts, Destin Daniel Cretton serving as Brand New Day’s director gives the fourth Spider-Man movie a different, bold, and exciting new identity, making it feel like the true start of a new era for the MCU’s Wallcrawler.
The entire film has a new look and tone to match this older Spider-Man who’s no longer in high school and has a new status quo. There’s also a greater focus on practical swinging and fighting, making the entire movie feel more physical, tying perfectly to the more grounded nature of Brand New Day’s story compared to No Way Home and the Webslinger’s previous appearances in the MCU.
The Mystery Of Sadie Sink’s MCU Character
Sadie Sink’s casting in Spider-Man: Brand New Day became a huge selling point thanks to Marvel Studios refusing to explain exactly who she was playing. Fans immediately started theorizing and speculating, with Jean Grey eventually becoming one of the most popular possibilities, a character whose debut as one of the MCU’s first mutants would have major ramifications ahead of Marvel Studios’ imminent X-Men reboot from director Jake Schreier.
In an age when major superhero reveals can be spoiled online with ease, that kind of mystery no doubt created some major urgency for superhero movie fans to see Brand New Day as quickly as possible to discover the answer for themselves on the big screen.
The MCU Spider-Man Audiences Have Been Waiting For
Another major reason behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s ongoing box office success has to be the fact that the new movie finally gives Holland’s Spider-Man a status quo that feels unmistakably like the Spider-Man we most often see on the page. Rather than being Iron Man’s protégé and fighting Thanos alongside the Avengers, Brand New Day sees Peter Parker operating independently in New York, fighting street-level villains and threats, working with the police, and struggling to balance both parts of his life as both Spider-Man and Peter Parker.
There are still plenty of key MCU interactions (like teaming up with Frank Castle’s Punisher and fighting the Incredible Hulk). Ultimately, Spider-Man: Brand New Day depicts Tom Holland as a quintessential Spider-Man, arguably making him the most comic-accurate version of the Webslinger we’ve ever seen on the big screen, and audiences are clearly responding well to that key focus.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Has Incredible Word of Mouth
The other major factor is simple: people actually like the movie, and can’t stop talking about it. Positive word of mouth will always be a blockbuster’s greatest advantage when it comes to the box office, especially for longevity. Not only has Brand New Day been benefiting from great reactions and reviews, but discussions online are ongoing, and the viral memes inspired by and responding to the movie show no signs of stopping either. The longer Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains at the center of the current pop culture zeitgeist, the better the box office numbers are likely going to be.
A Major Comeback Story For The MCU At Large
Finally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s success represents something much bigger for Marvel Studios in general. The Multiverse Saga as a whole hasn’t been nearly as successful as the prior Infinity Saga. As such, a greater selectivity has arguably arisen among certain viewers about which MCU movies they’re actually going to see in theaters. Thankfully, Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels like the new gold standard for what MCU movies need to be going forward.
The movie’s biggest supporting characters aren’t gratuitous cameos. The Hulk, Punisher, Yelena Belova, and Jean Grey all serve Spider-Man’s story as their own arcs are simultaneously developed in meaningful ways, more than earning their place in the movie and helping Brand New Day feel like one of the most organically lived-in MCU movies.
Brand New Day also achieves the peak balance of being deeply character-driven while still providing some of the coolest visual spectacle the MCU has ever seen. It truly does feel like the MCU at its best, especially for a non-Avengers movie. As such, the best way to explain Brand New Day’s success is that it’s effectively a major two-hit punch. Not only are we getting a peak story for the enduringly popular Spider-Man, but audiences are also showing up because Brand New Day is what the MCU should always feel like all the time.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures.
