Even More Lord Of The Rings Games Confirmed After Latest Remaster

The Lord of the Rings had been going through a bit of a quiet period on the gaming front after the issues with that game, but that all changed yesterday when Aspyr Media dropped The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, a remake of the 2011 release of the same name.

Though there had been a few rumors, the game was essentially shadow dropped, and it seems to be yet another use case where that tactic has intrinsically generated hype for a new release. Now, new information has emerged, and it suggests that several older The Lord of the Rings games could be about to return in a big way.

As first reported by True Achievements, War in the North developer Aspyr Media shared a press release to celebrate the launch of the game, but the really interesting part came at the end of the statement:

“The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and is the first The Lord of the Rings title released by Aspyr. Fans can look forward to even more classic releases by Aspyr from the beloved franchise in the future!”

Fans of The Lord of the Rings games of old will know that there are plenty of candidates that would almost certainly prove successful, if they were to return. The obvious examples are the official movie tie-ins from the PlayStation 2 era, which remain some of the best adaptations we’ve seen to date.

The most likely next target is The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, which, with a few improvements, could ascend far beyond the level it reached in 2009. Less likely (but still possible), is The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth II, the beloved strategy title that has been locked in rights hell for years at this point.

My personal vote would go to the criminally underrated turn-based PS2 effort, The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, which basically served as a very good Final Fantasy release set in the universe that Tolkien created.

The fact that Aspyr Media are willing to mention these other projects, even in passing, in an official press release, likely means they have also been cooking away in the background. That could mean another shadow drops on the way at some point, so keep an eye on social media at the start of 2027.
