Reacher Season 4, Episode 3 Ending Explained: Why Sampson’s Chief Of Staff Does THAT

Reacher season 4 ended its third episode with a horrifying scene that adds another layer of mystery to an already complex storyline, proving itself once again as Prime Video’s best action series. Reacher‘s Rotten Tomatoes score is setting records, and as we’re only three episodes in, it is safe to say that based on the three previous seasons of Reacher, the action is only going to get more explosive. That said, there is more to the show than action, and Reacher is so well-written that it gave us the same shock twice, and we still did not see it coming.

Of all the new characters in Reacher season 4, the ghost of Anna Merrick is already haunting many of them. Season 4’s harrowing first scene showed the distraught Anna crying on the subway before shooting herself dead in front of Reacher, leaving him as the closest witness to an unfolding conspiracy. That said, while Reacher might have been the nearest to Anna, another witness was just as important, and when Reacher recognizes the witness as Congressman John Sampson’s chief of staff, Nolan Cahill, Cahill ends his life by jumping from a platform rather than be questioned.

The fact that Reacher was able to shock us with a character’s unexpected suicide twice is a testament to the skill of the writers. Episode 4’s final moment instantly connects Cahill and Anna to what appears to be a secret that people are willing to die to protect. However, every episode of Reacher adds more context to the unfolding story, and what we think we know might not be the case.

We Can Assume Nolan Cahill Was Involved In The Conspiracy

Political thrillers like House of Cards perfectly illustrate the damage that a member of congress’ staff can do, and the crimes that they can commit, including protecting key figures from conspiracies. As Congressman Sampson’s chief of staff, Nolan Cahill would have been one of the most trusted members of his inner circle, with his main job being to protect Sampson’s focus and ensure his team runs smoothly. This could include addressing issues before they cause trouble, and if one of those issues was Anna Merrick, Cahill may have been preparing to deal with the situation.

Cahill was unlikely to be sharing Anna’s subway carriage by coincidence, and Reacher likely interrupted his intention toward her. This leaves the question of their connection open to interpretation for now, though it will certainly unfold over the rest of the season. When Reacher, Elsbeth, and Sampson approach him as he sits drunk at the bar, he references some of the major political scandals in recent decades, like Watergate and Iran Contra, which could hint as to the nature of the conspiracy.

His remarks that “things never stay hidden” and “whatever people try to hide, it always comes out” reveal that even if he is more of an observer than a key player in the events leading up to Anna’s death, he is still being kept informed, and therefore aware of a cover-up. However, his final words before jumping to his death were even more telling. Cahill tells John, “you would have made a good President,” implying that whatever the mystery is, it will end his career.

Reacher Season 4, Episode 3’s Ending Suggests Congressman Sampson Is Either Innocent Or A Criminal Mastermind

One of the major themes running through the Reacher book series and TV show is his dislike of authority, and virtually every book and season has proven him right. Reacher‘s biggest villains are corrupt characters in positions of power, like season 2’s Shane Langston, the former cop managing a weapons empire. With this track record, the chances that the friendly and self-deprecating Congressman John Sampson is deeply involved in the Merrick conspiracy are high. With Reacher season 4’s villains making even Paulie look small, and five episodes to go, the scale of the threat could be enormous.

When accused of fathering a child, Sampson was happy to offer evidence that would clear him. This is either an indication that he is an honest man, or that Reacher is looking in the wrong place. Sampson has several layers of protection around him, and it is plausible that he had Cahill set up to take the blame for crimes he has committed. With the Merrick case already changing from a scandal to a war crime, Cahill’s death appeared to be to avoid consequences. However, whether punishment would have come from the law or from Sampson remains to be seen.

Sampson’s behavior around Cahill’s death is intriguing. When Cahill stood, giving Sampson a clear “goodbye” and began walking toward the ledge, there were several opportunities to stop him, especially as he appeared to have a significant quantity of alcohol. Given the way people can react in a time of shock, it is not out of the question that Sampson and Elsbeth were frozen and in disbelief. However, it is just as plausible that the two were allowing Cahill to jump. Elsbeth has protected Sampson from Reacher before, and this could be due to simple mistrust or something more sinister.

What We Know So Far About The Merrick Case In Reacher Season 4

Reacher season 4 is based on the book Gone Tomorrow, which is a fan favorite and includes one of the most suspense-filled plots in any of the series. After Lila’s original story about trying to find her father was revealed to be a cover for her work as a journalist investigating John’s war crimes, the stakes were raised. Lila could be close to the truth, literally forcing Cahill over the edge, but the nature of the Merrick conspiracy still feels partly hidden, with more dark secrets waiting for Reacher, Lila, or somebody else entirely, to uncover them.

Jacob might have come to terms with the fact that Anna took her own life, but his nephew, Ben, is still missing. Congressman Sampson will need a new chief of staff. Lila and Amisha are presumably safe for now, but given that this is a season of Reacher, they are certain to find themselves in a dangerous situation once more. With a key lead dead and a congressman who may or may not be corrupt, Reacher has some more digging to do if he wants to uncover the horrifying truth about the Merrick case.
