Wednesday Season 3 Detail Promises Big Changes For The Show’s Future

[

Though plot details for Wednesday season 3 remain scarce, Jenna Ortega recently dropped a huge revelation about the Netflix show’s next installment. The Wednesday season 2 finale was full of cliffhangers, with the ominous introduction of Morticia’s sister, Ophelia Frump; Enid disappearing in seemingly permanent werewolf form; and Wednesday taking off with Uncle Fester to look for Enid instead of returning home. This is a major decision on Wednesday’s part, especially because she spent much of season 2 navigating her fraught relationship with her mother, Morticia, which will likely be further explored in the upcoming third season.

Speaking with Esquire, Ortega shed some light on Wednesday season 3, saying, “This season, especially because the kids are seniors in high school now, we’re dealing with more confrontational feelings regarding family and what it means to be an adult and what you see for your life. It’s not really until you get to the precipice of adulthood that you start to realize, ‘Oh, God, well, maybe I’ve got to have a plan.’

This is big news, not just for Wednesday and the greater Addams family dynamic, but also because it’s her last year of high school. Thus far, the Nevermore Academy has been central to the series, but setting up what Wednesday‘s future might look like beyond the school could be the right move.

Wednesday Would Be Smart To Move Away From Nevermore After Season 3

With its gothic, Tim Burton atmosphere, the Nevermore Academy has the exact vibes fans of Wednesday Addams want in a TV series. However, while the academic setting has served Wednesday well, with its classes, extracurricular clubs, and rules, the school for outcasts is very much attached to the teenage characters. Now that they’re growing up and navigating the world as adults, as Ortega promised for season 3, it’s time to look beyond Nevermore.

There’s also the fact that the central monster mystery in Wednesday season 2, while fun, felt like a bit of a retread from the first season. While Nevermore should definitely be part of the third season, as it’s most of the Wednesday main characters‘ senior year, having future seasons continue to take place at the school runs the risk of rendering the show samey and redundant. Thankfully, season 3 already appears to be setting the stage for life beyond Nevermore Academy.

Wednesday Season 3 Can Help Prove Why The Series No Longer Needs Nevermore

What little we know about the third season points to much of the story taking place outside Nevermore’s walls. In addition to Ortega’s comments, it’s already been revealed that some of Wednesday season 3 will take place in Paris, with the titular protagonist traveling to the City of Lights for “dark reasons.”

The Addams family lore will also be expanded upon in season 3, as Eva Green’s Ophelia Frump will play a pivotal role. In the very last moments of the season 2 finale, Grandmama Frump enters the cell she keeps Ophelia in to find her daughter painting “Wednesday Must Die” on the wall in blood. This sets Ophelia up as a season 3 antagonist separate from Nevermore.

There’s also the long list of new cast members to consider, which includes Winona Ryder, Chris Sarandon, Oscar Morgan, Kennedy Moyer, Lena Headey, Andrew McCarthy, and James Lance. With most of these actors being well past the age of high school seniors, it’s unlikely that all of their characters will be affiliated with Nevermore Academy, thus allowing Wednesday season 3 to branch the show’s plot out even further. The school for outcasts has indeed served the series well, but now, it’s time for graduation.
