‘Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu’ Sets September Disney+ Release

Disney has set a Sept. 2 global streaming date for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu on Disney+. That reps a long 103 day window between theatrical and streaming for the Jon Favreau directed movie.

The movie led the Memorial Day box office with a $167M global start, but wound up being the lowest grossing live-action Star Wars movie ever with a final worldwide tally of $345M off a production cost before P&A of $165M.

The IP was hatched on Disney+ over three seasons with myriad spinoffs such as the live-action Ahsoka series and The Book of Boba Fett. Moviegoers essentially didn’t want to go out of their way to see a streaming property on the big screen, particularly one sans heat at 60% fresh with critics and 86% with audiences.

Mandalorian and Grogu was co-written by Favreau, Noah Kloor and Lucasfilm co-Boss Dave Filoni. Ian Bryce, Kathleen Kennedy, Favreau and Filoni produced the movie which stars Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, David Allen White, and Martin Scorsese.

There’s hope that when it comes to Star Wars on the big screen, that next year’s Memorial Day opener, Star Wars: Starfighter which takes place in a brand new galaxy sans Skywalkers will lead to a revival. It’s directed by Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Shawn Levy and stars Barbie and Project Hail Mary‘s Ryan Gosling.
