Young Sherlock season 2 is bringing in a new face.
Young Sherlock is a Prime Original Series focusing on the early life of the beloved detective Sherlock Holmes (played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin). Released earlier this year, the first season sees Tiffin’s version of Sherlock solve his first ever case. The series is co-created by Sherlock Holmes (2009) movie director Guy Ritchie, and has a cast including Max Irons, Dónal Finn, Zine Tseng, and Holly Cattle.
Now, the official Young Sherlock Instagram page and Tiffin’s own page have revealed photos from the set of the show’s sophomore season. The official photo shows Irons standing alongside Sophie Skelton, who wears a period-appropriate red dress.
Tiffin’s post shows a similar photo, as well as another photo of the pair standing next to a horse-drawn carriage. Tiffin also shared a photo of himself on set and a close-up of the Baker Street house.
Irons is a returning cast member from Young Sherlock season 1. He plays Mycroft, Sherlock’s nearly equally astute older brother. Mycroft is a key supporting character in the series, as he also was in the beloved BBC Sherlock series, where he was portrayed by Mark Gatiss.
The identity of Skelton’s character is far more opaque. Her casting in Young Sherlock season 2 was announced just a couple of weeks ago, where it was confirmed that she would be joining the cast alongside fellow add-ons in Indira Varma, Aiden Gillen, and Olivia Williams. At that time, the identity of her character was not revealed and is still being kept under wraps.
These social media posts do not confirm who Skelton will be playing, but they do suggest that she’ll be in scenes with Mycroft. In the BBC series, Mycroft has an assistant named Anthea, so Skelton could be filling a similar role. However, Anthea does not appear in the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories, and thus is not considered canonical to the overall franchise.
Mycroft also does not traditionally have romantic interests in any Sherlock Holmes adaptations. Instead, he is portrayed as being married to work and more focused on managing his younger brother and the governmental matters that they both get themselves into. As such, it seems unlikely that Skelton would play a significant other, unless Young Sherlock goes in a different direction for this next season.
Whatever she ends up playing, Skelton will be a treat for TV fans as she takes on this role. Young Sherlock marks the first time the actor took on a new television role since she started acting in the historical fantasy drama Outlander. Young Sherlock will be a different kind of role, but its period setting and buzz could still be a draw for fans of her work on Outlander.
