The original PlayStation still holds a special place in players’ hearts, with its extensive catalog of games featuring some of the most iconic and nostalgic legends in gaming history. From Tomb Raider‘s Lara Croft to Spyro the Dragon to Rayman and even weirdo aliens like Abe from Oddworld, the PS1-era games had so many iconic characters that fans still love and remember fondly to this day.
With the recent trend of older IPs getting official remakes or reboots after decades spent in obscurity, it feels like virtually any beloved gaming icon could suddenly be given another shot at the spotlight. Franchises once thought to be relics of a bygone era are finding entirely new audiences, while longtime players get the chance to reconnect with characters they grew up with.
And now, one of the most highly anticipated returns of a PlayStation 1 legend is finally happening, with Crash Bandicoot officially being brought back from the dead (via CB).
In a new update, Crash Bandicoot is officially making his way into Fortnite as part of Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, giving the former PlayStation mascot another major return to the spotlight. Epic Games revealed Crash in the season’s new trailer alongside an enormous lineup of gaming icons including Sonic the Hedgehog, Spyro, Persona 5’s Joker, Mega Man, and several Mortal Kombat characters.
Fortnite: Override launches on August 20 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, iOS, and Android, and is built heavily around classic video game crossovers, with its world incorporating characters and locations from multiple franchises.
Crash’s appearance also comes at an interesting time for the long-running platforming series. Recent rumors claim XBOX has greenlit a new Crash Bandicoot game, potentially setting the stage for a more substantial revival after years without a new mainline installment. However, the rumored project has yet to be officially announced, and details about exactly what form the game will take remain unknown.
For now, Crash’s arrival in Fortnite gives fans their first major dose of the character’s comeback. Whether the rumored new game ultimately turns out to be a full remake, reboot, or something entirely different, Crash Bandicoot is starting to feel relevant again in a way he hasn’t for years.
His inclusion in Fortnite: Override puts him back in front of a massive audience, and if the recent rumors are accurate, this crossover could end up being just the beginning of a much bigger comeback for the former PlayStation icon.
