It seems that the recent shake-ups at XBOX are lighting a serious fire under Bethesda Game Studios, with the developers releasing unprecedented amounts of information for all their IPs in the past few months. In a face-saving social media post immediately following a massive round of layoffs at the studio, Bethesda provided updates on multiple projects in the Fallout franchise and even gave players a rare update on The Elder Scrolls 6.
Seeing as it’s been 14 years since Skyrim released and Bethesda hasn’t given players more than a brief glimpse at the next game in one of XBOX’s most successful franchises, it’s not surprising that XBOX’s new leadership has high expectations for the studio.
Other than a few recent teasers, mum is still the word on The Elder Scrolls 6, but apparently Bethesda has something else up their sleeve, as The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is officially getting a major update in the coming months (via X).
In a new announcement from Bethesda Game Studios largely focused on an upcoming Fallout 4 Creations patch, the studio decided to sneak in a little teaser for a major new content update for Skyrim. Though details are still unavailable, and it’s unclear exactly when this new update will release, it’s an interesting ripple given the recent increased pressure on the studio. According to the update, the studio is “also working on a Skyrim update with details to come soon.”
By all intents and purposes, it does seem that Bethesda has been more transparent with the goings-on behind the scenes since the recent round of devastating layoffs. Here’s a look at the full post on X:
Given the announcement was included in a Creations update for Fallout, it’s entirely possible the Skyrim update they mentioned will also be focused on the game’s Creation content as well, though that’s purely speculative at the moment.
That said, Skyrim’s most recent official updates have focused mainly on the Creations system rather than major changes to the base game. Bethesda combined mods and Creation Club content into one menu and added features like Steam Deck support, ultrawide support, load-order syncing, and technical fixes.
New paid and community-made Creations have continued to release, adding quests, companions, areas, and gear. However, Skyrim has not received a major engine, graphics, or next-gen overhaul recently, or any substantial DLC or expansion content for that matter. Ultimately, fans will be satisfied to receive any of the above, but generally speaking, most players would likely prefer an official update on The Elder Scrolls 6 instead.
