For many fans of the Game of Thrones universe, one of the most effective world-building aspects of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and Fire & Blood novels is the lineage, history, and importance placed on armaments such as Jon Snow’s Longclaw or Arya’s Needle. This is one element that was pretty effectively carried over to the HBO Game of Thrones series, and to a much lesser extent in House of the Dragon.
The treatment of Valyrian steel weapons throughout the franchise essentially turns these objects into characters in their own right, helping the audience become invested in the larger history and mythology of Westeros. Weapons such as Ned Stark’s Ice and Daemon Targaryen’s Dark Sister carry histories and associations that make them feel like enduring pieces of the world rather than mere tools of combat.
In most cases, the weapon’s history serves to mirror the character that wields it, and arguably no weapon depicts this connection more symbolically than Brienne of Tarth’s iconic Oathkeeper. And after seven years since its last appearance on screen, Oathkeeper is making an official return in a new update for Winter Is Coming.
Oathkeeper has officially been added as a new Commander-exclusive weapon for Cavalry Commander Brienne of Tarth in a brand-new content update for the officially licensed browser game from YooZoo and GTArcade, Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming.
As an exclusive weapon, Oathkeeper is specifically tied to Brienne, whose Commander unit is classified as Cavalry, with fragments for the new weapon now available through the limited-time Ruins Treasure Hunt event. The August 13 update also introduces Varys as a new “Greensight” Commander, the SS Sacred March marching skin, and four SS troop appearances based on the Winterfell Soldier, Brotherhood Without Banners, Beastmask Army, and Summer Isles Bowmen.
Also arriving is the limited-time Winterfell Trial, which features both Personal and Alliance challenges. Players can deploy combinations of Commanders, dragons, and troops against increasingly difficult enemies, while Alliances can work together to unlock and battle timed bosses for additional rewards. The update also addresses several shop issues, event reward pools, troop-sorting options, Alliance features, and other quality-of-life systems.
Originally released worldwide in 2019, Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming is a free-to-play real-time strategy game played through PC web browsers, with players building and upgrading their own Westerosi stronghold, raising armies, recruiting familiar Game of Thrones characters as Commanders like Brienne, joining Alliances, and competing for territory and ultimately the Iron Throne. It’s well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the franchise looking for a new way to experience the story and world.
