The original Metal Gear Solid rightly stands as one of the greatest games of the PlayStation 1 generation, transitioning the series to a 3D format for the first time and really showing the potential of the series moving forward. Since then, we’ve obviously had a lot more games, all of which have done something a little different with the formula and become great in their own right.
That said, there is something genuinely unique about the first Solid game (or the third in the Metal Gear series), and returning to it today is such a rewarding experience, if you’re willing to ignore some of its more archaic foibles. Now, the game is about to get an entirely new facet, thanks to the hard work of fans, and it could be a great way to resurrect interest in Metal Gear Solid moving forward.
As first reported by DSO Gaming, YouTuber Felipe is currently working on a co-op mod for the first Metal Gear Solid game. Though we don’t have anything like a release date for the full project just yet, the creator shared a very impressive trailer on his channel, with the description laying out exactly how ambitious they are planning to be:
“A WORLD FIRST. For the first time, Metal Gear Solid (1998) is being played online by two players simultaneously. This is the first attempt to bring the original PlayStation classic into a true online multiplayer experience something the original game was never designed to support. No remake. No reimagined version. Just the original Metal Gear Solid, reverse-engineered and brought online. One game. Two players. One world. This is only the beginning. Metal Gear Solid Coop.”
It’s the kind of thing that those who were young when the game originally launched could scarcely have dreamed of, and it’s all been made possible with the power of emulation. The major technical hurdle is likely the top-down, overhead camera perspective, which could prove difficult to handle if players get too far apart from one another.
Other than that, though, it already looks pretty great, so we can only hope that by the time it launches, it feels just as at home as all the other features in the game.
With Hideo Kojima now off the Konami train, the future of the Metal Gear franchise is considerably more up in the air than many fans would like. The company retains the rights to the game and could produce more releases tied to the IP, but many fear what that would look like in an era without the games’ creator.
