The Best Reacher Novels, According To Goodreads

[

The first Jack Reacher book, Killing Floor, was published in 1997, and the action-thriller genre was never the same. Lee Child’s iconic novel series has taken its titular character on unbelievable adventures, been adapted for the screen many times over, and has made its mark on the world of publishing, with some of the Reacher books receiving rave reviews.

With Reacher season 5 set to continue pushing the boundaries of the Prime Video TV adaptation of the books, it’s thrilling that there’s more of the series coming soon. It helps that Lee Child and his collaborator, Andrew Child, haven’t stopped expanding the Reacher universe on the page.

There are 31 total books currently in the mainline series of Jack Reacher. Meaning there’s no shortage of stories and adventures to get lost in. However, not every installment is created equal. It can be daunting to decide where to start when picking up the Reacher series for the first time. Lee Child’s Reacher departure was recently announced, making it the perfect time to look back on the books that made his career and have come to define the Jack Reacher franchise.

Without Fail (2002) (#6)

4.16 Stars

The cover of Without Fail, a Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child

In Without Fail, readers are thrown back into the thrills and high drama of Reacher’s adventures when the ex-military police officer is tasked with protecting the future Vice President of the United States. Reacher is no stranger to high-stakes jobs like this, but of course, there’s more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye. Notable for many reasons, Without Fail is the novel that first introduces the amazing recurring character, Frances Neagley.

It’s clear from the first moments of Without Fail that Reacher and Neagley are a great team, and that she’ll be an important part of his world in the novels to come. Without Fail is one of the Reacher books Prime should adapt in the coming seasons of the show, as there are many ways the writers could update the 2002 novel to the present day.

The Enemy (2004) (#8)

4.18 Stars

The cover of The Enemy, a Jack Reacher novel by Lee Childs

It’s safe to say that it’s pretty easy to make an enemy out of Jack Reacher, as the character doesn’t take threats lightly. This is clear throughout The Enemy, Child’s eighth novel in the Jack Reacher franchise, and the mainline book set the earliest in Reacher’s life. Though it was published in 2004, and many Reacher books are contemporaneous with their year of release, The Enemy is set in 1990, following a younger Reacher.

Most of the Jack Reacher books see Reacher after he’s left the military police and is traveling as a lone, Old-West-style tracker and hero. However, The Enemy is an important glimpse into Reacher’s past when he was still in the military and solving cases that went all the way to the top. Reading The Enemy today is a fun throwback to older spy thriller narratives, and though it’s set in the past, it’s just as relevant and exciting to engage with in the present.

Gone Tomorrow (2009) (#13)

4.19 Stars

The cover of Gone Tomorrow, a Jack Reacher novel by Lee Childs

Throughout Gone Tomorrow, Reacher doesn’t want to get to the bottom of the mystery merely because lives hang in the balance, but because he witnessed something he can’t forget. After encountering a woman on a New York City subway who dies before she can commit a planned act of terror, Reacher discovers that this woman isn’t at all who he thought she would be, and more people are tangled up in her death than he thought possible.

It’s no surprise that Reacher season 4 brought the plot of Gone Tomorrow to life onscreen, as it’s one of the most surprising and mind-bending additions to the Reacher canon. However, in the TV show, Reacher updates the storylines from plots set in the political context of 2009 to the present day, demonstrating that while the world changes, the central stories of Reacher are timeless.

The Hard Way (2006) (#10)

4.20 Stars

The cover of The Hard Way, a Jack Reacher novel

Reacher finds himself on the wrong side of the law in The Hard Way. However, as the book’s title would suggest, Reacher never succeeds by taking the easy way out, and in the tenth installment of the Jack Reacher series, he isn’t about to start. Working as a hired man for the powerful Edward Lane, Reacher is tasked with tracking down Lane’s wife and her daughter in the wake of their kidnapping. Though Reacher knows he can’t trust Lane, the money he offers is good, and Reacher might be the only one who can find them.

Set in Manhattan, The Hard Way draws upon the imagery and atmospheric tension of classic crime novels set in the iconic city, and includes some of the most unexpected twists of any Reacher book. It’s a twisting thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats and delivers a satisfying payoff as Reacher scrambles to get to the bottom of Lane’s story.

Bad Luck And Trouble (2007) (#11)

4.22 Stars

The cover of Bad Luck and Trouble, a Jack Reacher Novel

In Bad Luck and Trouble, things get personal for Reacher, and it’s when he’s emotionally involved that the reader sees the character at his most compelling. Neagley signals Reacher, and he must answer the call, especially when he discovers that members of his old team are being targeted. As always, the truth behind the disappearances of his old friends and his investigation runs deeper than Reacher or Neagley could imagine. However, they’re more than capable of untangling the mystery.

Neagley is returning for season 2 on Prime Video, as the Reacher spinoff has proved just as explosively popular as the original series. Though Jack Reacher will always be the beloved protagonist of the novels, in works like Bad Luck and Trouble readers are reminded that Neagley is just as fun to read about, and has plenty of exciting adventures on her own.

Bad Luck and Trouble is available for purchase here.

Worth Dying For (2010) (#15)

4.22 Stars

The cover Worth Dying For, a Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child

One of the best parts of any Jack Reacher novel is the way Child sets his stories in U.S. cities and towns that would typically be overlooked within the crime and mystery genres. In Worth Dying For, Reacher finds himself up against a powerful crime family in Nebraska, looking into a cold case surrounding the disappearance of a child. Worth Dying For has one of the most emotional storylines of any Jack Reacher book, leaving the audience just as thirsty for revenge as Reacher.

Layer upon layer of corruption, shock, and conspiracy pile up throughout Worth Dying For, giving Reacher plenty of opportunity to crack skulls and put a stop to the dealings of the criminal underworld he discovers. As always, Reacher is pulled in multiple directions, with many characters desperate for his help and plenty of villains trying to stop him. However, the reader can rest assured that Reacher won’t stop until everyone is brought to justice in Worth Dying For.

One Shot (2005) (#9)

4.24 Stars

The cover of One Shot, a Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child

In a thrilling case of a man wrongly accused of murder and Reacher set up as the only person who can clear his name, One Shot is the Jack Reacher universe at its very best. One of the best-plotted mysteries of the entire series, One Shot has everything readers look for within the mystery, crime, and action genres. The seemingly open-and-shut murder case that draws Reacher in soon turns out to be drenched in conspiracy.

The ninth installment of the Jack Reacher series, One Shot, is deep enough into the universe that Child understood his main character intimately and felt comfortable taking some risks with the story. Tom Cruise’s 2012 movie, Jack Reacher, was adapted from One Shot. There are many Reacher books to choose from for adaptation, but One Shot remains one of the most propulsive.

One Shot is available for purchase here.

Chain Reaction (2026) (#31)

4.61 Stars

The cover of Chain Reaction by Lee Child and Andrew Child

As of now, Lee and Andrew Child’s most recent addition to the Jack Reacher universe, Chain Reaction, is the highest-rated Reacher book on Goodreads. Following General Susan Turner as she seeks Reacher to help her solve the murder of one of her team members, and Reacher as he heads to a small town in Colorado that’s been shaken by recent technological developments, Chain Reaction is a relevant, contemporary expansion of the series’ world.

Chain Reaction is officially the last book in the series that Lee Child will author, as Andrew Child steps up to take over the future of the Jack Reacher franchise. While it’s still too early to know how Chain Reaction will hold up long-term, its current rating of 4.61 stars is a fitting high for Lee Child to go out on. It’s clear that the beloved character Jack Reacher will keep getting better with time.
