FADU wants to take the CPU out of AI storage by putting the file system inside the SSD, but the proof won’t arrive until 2027

  • FADU’s File-Semantic SSD runs path lookup, permission checks, and file-to-flash mapping in firmware instead of on the host
  • NFSv3 requests ride inside standard NVMe commands, so GPUs, DPUs, and remote clients can reach files without requiring a host file system
  • Its headline 460,000 ops/s result came from a PCIe 5.0 host, with PCIe 6.0 results promised by Q1 2027

South Korean controller designer FADU has shown off an SSD that understands files rather than just blocks, betting that the next bottleneck in AI storage is not raw bandwidth but the CPU time spent working out where data lives.

The File-Semantic SSD (FS-SSD), unveiled at the OCP Global Summit, moves file lookup, access checks and file-to-address translation into firmware on FADU’s sixth-generation controller.
