It’s Officially the End of an Era for Apple TV’s 9/10 Sci-Fi Series

[

Few platforms are operating at the same level with sci-fi shows as Apple TV, which is responsible for dozens of hits just in the last few years. One of the first Apple TV sci-fi shows that comes to mind is Severance, the Adam Scott and Britt Lower-led series that’s directed and produced by Ben Stiller. Apple TV renewed Severance for Season 3 on the same day as the Season 2 finale, but over a year later, there’s still no word yet on when Severance Season 3 will be released — the third season is now in production, though. The same uncertainty also applies to Pluribus, the new Apple TV sci-fi show from creator Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad) that broke all of Severance’s records. The show has been picked up for Season 2, but it may not be released until late next year, possibly even in 2028.

One show that’s flown under the radar the last few years is Dark Matter, another sci-fi show on Apple TV that dropped its first season back in 2024. The series is based on the acclaimed sci-fi novel of the same name by Blake Crouch, and although Season 1 adapted the entirety of Crouch’s novel, Apple TV still decided to renew the show for Season 2. Dark Matter finally returned for Season 2 at the end of August after a two-year hiatus, and after the latest episode aired this Friday, the second season has finally come to an end. Apple TV has yet to publicly decide the fate of Dark Matter beyond Season 2, but it’s certainly the end of an era for the show, which has seemingly told not one, but two complete stories for Jason and Daniela.

What Is ‘Dark Matter’ About?

The first season of Dark Matter follows Jason and Daniela Dessen, played by Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, who have their lives turned upside down when an alternate version of Jason from another reality kidnaps the original Jason and steals his life. The two ultimately find their way back to each other, and in Season 2, they’re forced out into the multiverse to find a new home. The multiverse angle allows plenty of room for more stories, but only time will tell if the show will have a chance to continue.
