Democrats’ Senate win could shield Federal Reserve from Trump’s influence, but risks persist

[

Democrats’ sweeping midterm victory could strengthen the Federal Reserve’s ability to resist President Donald Trump’s attempts to influence monetary policy, with their expected control of the Senate emerging as a key obstacle to his efforts to reshape the central bank, Reuters reported.

Control of the upper chamber gives Democrats significant leverage over Fed appointments, potentially making it harder for Trump to install allies on the central bank’s seven member board. However, the political shift could also bring greater scrutiny of Chairman Kevin Warsh and complicate the administration’s efforts to overhaul banking regulations.

Senate control puts Trump’s Fed appointments under pressure

The change in political balance could significantly limit Trump’s ability to influence the Fed through appointments. Three of the central bank’s seven governors were appointed by former President Joe Biden, while former Chair Jerome Powell remains on the board despite his growing differences with Trump.

Trump has repeatedly criticised the current composition of the board, calling it “hostile” and “partisan”, while pressing policymakers to cut interest rates. The Fed, however, has prioritised controlling inflation, Reuters reported.

The Senate’s role in confirming nominees could become particularly important if Trump succeeds in removing Governor Lisa Cook. His administration is expected to pursue an administrative procedure in the coming weeks to establish grounds for her dismissal over alleged errors in mortgage applications filed before she joined the Fed.Cook is likely to challenge any removal in court. Even if Trump succeeds, a Democrat controlled Senate would make it difficult for him to secure confirmation of a replacement.

Warsh faces tougher scrutiny as Warren gains influence

The political shift could also make Warsh’s position more challenging. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren is likely to take charge of the Senate Banking Committee, replacing Republican Tim Scott, a Trump ally and supporter of Warsh.

Warren has been a vocal critic of Warsh and could intensify scrutiny of his financial disclosures, including his handling of hundreds of millions of dollars in assets before taking the Fed’s top job.

Democrats could also question his approach to inflation and monetary policy, particularly after campaigning heavily on the cost of living.

Economists at Monetary Policy Analytics said Warsh “got no support for his chairmanship from Democrats… Hostile questioning could put Warsh’s rhetoric to the test”.

Meanwhile, Democratic control of key congressional committees could slow banking and regulatory changes backed by the administration and Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman, including stablecoin rules under the Genius Act and changes to the Fed’s bank supervision framework, Reuters reported.
