Warning: This article contains spoilers for “Crystal Lake”
It’s often the case that exhilarating horror stories make it to the screen after having successful lives as novels—just ask Stephen King.
For Crystal Lake, though, it works the other way round. Hit Netflix horror Crystal Lake captivated viewers; a sequel to Friday the 13th, it became Peacock’s fourth-biggest original scripted series in just 11 days. Even better, it’s now been adapted into a new novel, courtesy of publisher A24 and horror author Tim Waggoner.
Released on October 15, Crystal Lake: The Novel follows Pamela Voohees and her rather unconventional methods of coping with her son’s presumed death, to put things mildly. Of course, viewers of the original Friday the 13th will recognize Pam as the original slasher behind the hockey mask, but by the end of Crystal Lake you know what drove her to commit such heinous acts, as well as the twisted reasons she keeps committing them.
Crystal Lake gave more lore about Jason’s apparent immortality, as well as plenty of character exploration for Pamela. The show demonstrates a fascinating portrayal of Pam’s disturbing transformation from a concerned single mother to a suffocatingly-protective, psychologically-compromised killer. Watching her slowly fall into her psychotic spiral following Jason’s supposed drowning, as well as her vice-like attachment to Grace as a perversion of the mother-child dynamic, are already a captivating watch. The novel will surely gave an even better look into Pam’s interior life, and the adaptation could be even more valuable too..
For those who don’t want to lose the slasher elements of this franchise, don’t fret: Crystal Lake The Novel doesn’t seem as though it’ll shy away from some of the grisly kill scenes seen in the show. After all, the novel’s author is the pen behind the official Terrifier novel tie-ins. But beyond the violence enacted by Pamela (and Jason and Grace), the novelization could shine a brighter light on some of the arguably more disturbing of the series.
Crystal Lake features cold-hearted medical abuse, notably in flashback scenes of Pam’s pregnancy and Jason’s early childhood. The show reveals that Project Argonaut, the immoral medical experiment orchestrated by Bellflower, is responsible for Jason’s ability to heal quickly from injuries and to grow stronger and larger in so short a time. Episode nine already shows the fate of the experiment’s conductor at the hands of Pamela, but the novel could give us so much more detail on the project itself. These flashback scenes could show us Pam’s turmoil during and shortly following pregnancy, allowing for some truly disturbing body horror-adjacent writing.
Given this is the case, Crystal Lake viewers who loved the expanding lore and characters will surely be drawn to this novelization. Running at 448 pages, it has room to be a classic slasher as well as a deep dive into Pam’s twisted mind.
The novel is available now on A24’s official site, with expanded buying options inevitably coming soon.
