‘Saving Private Ryan’ Meets ‘Looper’ in the Sci-Fi Cult Classic Officially Taking Streaming by Storm

[

The stars of a 2014 cult classic — Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise — have had a rather different year, professionally speaking. Blunt returned to star in The Devil Wears Prada 2, the legacy sequel to her breakout hit, The Devil Wears Prada, and delivered an acclaimed performance in Steven Spielberg‘s sci-fi movie Disclosure Day. The new movie grossed roughly $700 million at the worldwide box office — an excellent result for everyone involved, especially Blunt, who received her first Oscar nomination very recently. Cruise, on the other hand, delivered the biggest flop of his career, the political satire Digger. The movie made roughly $50 million worldwide against a budget that has been reported to be as high as $180 million.

Blunt and Cruise worked together on a cult classic sci-fi movie that has long been the subject of sequel talk. While the movie wasn’t exactly a breakout hit in its original run, it received excellent reviews and has clearly found a devoted following on PVOD and digital. Almost as if to reemphasize its popularity while the newly restructured Skydance weighs future options, the movie witnessed a spike on streaming.

It was released in 2014, not long after Cruise had revived the Mission: Impossible franchise with Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol and had launched a new franchise for himself with Jack Reacher. Directed by Doug Liman, the film generated $380 million worldwide against a reported budget of nearly $180 million. Conventional wisdom suggests that it should have grossed at least $400 million worldwide to turn a marginal profit in theaters.

The Fan-Favorite Sci-Fi Movie Holds a 91% Rotten Tomatoes Score

That said, its performance at home has been nothing short of extraordinary, which is perhaps why the cast and director are routinely asked about a possible sequel. While one has been in various stages of development, there has been no firm update on whether it’ll actually get made. By now, you’ve probably guessed that we’re talking about Edge of Tomorrow, also featuring Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson. The movie follows a reluctant hero who is pushed to the frontlines of a battle against alien invaders, while stuck in a time loop.

The movie now holds a “Certified Fresh” 91% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Gripping, well-acted, funny, and clever, Edge of Tomorrow offers entertaining proof that Tom Cruise is still more than capable of shouldering the weight of a blockbuster action thriller.” According to FlixPatrol, the film is among the top 10 most popular titles on the domestic iTunes leaderboard, which is currently topped by Zach Cregger‘s Resident Evil reboot.
