Netflix Officially Turns Amazon’s Sci-Fi Thriller Into the No. 1 Streaming Show

[

Several shows over the years have been blessed by “the Netflix effect.” This is when a network or a streaming platform makes one of its high-potential series available on Netflix, in an effort to introduce it to a wider audience. Typically, only a part of the show is released on Netflix, with the goal being to divert audiences to the original platform for the latest episodes. Breaking Bad is perhaps the most popular example of the Netflix effect, with AMC having leased the show’s first few seasons to Netflix and transformed it into a culture-defining hit. More recently, the TNT series The Last Ship became a massive hit years after its conclusion thanks to a Netflix drop. Now, an even bigger beneficiary of the Netflix effect has revealed itself.

The show in question originally premiered on Epix in 2022, before the platform was rebranded as MGM+. Drawing heavily from the works of Stephen King, the sci-fi horror series unfolds in a mysterious town that traps everyone who enters it, and follows the town’s mayor and sheriff as he contends with its many mysteries. The show has aired four seasons so far, drawing comparisons to Lost and Widow’s Bay.

Cleverly, only three seasons have been made available on Netflix, with the hope that audiences sign up for MGM+ to check out the recently concluded fourth season. The show has been renewed for a fifth and final season, and MGM+ will aim to build awareness before it airs. Despite positive reviews, the series is still firmly in cult-favorite territory. It holds a tremendous 96% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with the third season having earned a perfect 100% score.

Here’s Your Next Sci-Fi Binge

We’re talking, of course, about From. Executive produced by the Russo Brothers and Lost director Jack Bender, the show stars Lost alum Harold Perrineau along with Catalina Sandino Moreno and Eion Bailey. From’s 10-episode fourth season ended this June, having received an excellent 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Collider’s review of the fourth season noted that “the strongest element of this season is the character arcs, which are given far more weight than previously.”

According to the latest edition of the Nielsen streaming report, which tracks the week of October 19 to October 25, From took the number-one spot on the overall chart. The show’s first three seasons amassed 1.68 billion minutes watched, marking the biggest debut for an acquired title this year. For context, Prime Video’s second season of The Terminal List debuted with roughly half the viewership, while the fourth season of Netflix’s The Diplomat clocked 500 million fewer minutes watched. You can check out From on Netflix and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
