The True Story Behind ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Is Officially Streaming for Free

[

With the kind of attention that World War II films and series typically garner, a 2018 movie that has so far remained comparatively under-the-radar has a great chance of being discovered this month. The movie was recently added to the library of a free streaming platform, making it available to audiences who haven’t yet seen it. Based on a real story, the film was directed by Chris Weitz, who is otherwise best-known for the blockbuster American Pie films and The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and for co-creating the Apple TV series Murderbot.

Weitz made a creative detour into more dramatic territory with the Oscar-nominated A Better Life. The 2018 film marked another non-IP project for him. It starred Oscar Isaac as a real-life Mossad agent who tracked down Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in South America and brought him to justice in Israel. Eichmann was played by the legendary Ben Kingsley in the movie. Kingsley, of course, is synonymous with World War II films thanks to his Oscar-nominated role in Steven Spielberg‘s epic Schindler’s List.

The 2018 movie underperformed at the box office, grossing around $18 million worldwide against a reported budget of $22 million. It found a larger audience when it was eventually made available to stream on Netflix following its theatrical run. Like so many movies aimed at older men, the 2018 Nazi-hunting drama received mixed critical reviews, but was embraced by its target audience. Case in point: the movie holds a 60% critics’ score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, but its audience score is sitting at 67%.

More recently, another drama about bringing a Nazi war criminal to justice — Nuremberg, starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek — earned a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The even more recent World War II thriller Pressure, starring Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser, also received a 95% audience score on the aggregator website.

Here’s Where You Can Watch ‘Operation Finale’ For Free

But we’re talking about Operation Finale. The film’s consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads, “Operation Finale is well-intentioned, well-acted, and overall entertaining, even if the depth and complexity of the real-life events depicted can get a little lost in their dramatization.” Also starring Mélanie Laurent, Nick Kroll, Lior Raz, and Haley Lu Richardson, the movie is now streaming on Pluto TV. Audiences interested in more Nazi-hunting storytelling might also want to check out Munich, Inglourious Basterds, and the Prime Video series Hunters, starring Al Pacino and Logan Lerman.
