There is, sadly, a shortage of Fallout games, something that simply shouldn’t be the case considering the roaring success each entry proves to be both critically and commercially. However, with Bethesda juggling numerous franchises and electing to do all the work itself until recently, one can’t be too surprised that the Fallout video game series has stagnated a little. Still, it’s a great shame that the last single-player RPG release was over a decade ago, and its MMO successor was a disaster until only a year or so ago.
However, with Obsidian taking the Fallout reins, and Bethesda finally pushing The Elder Scrolls 6 to completion, we may finally start seeing the likes of Fallout 5, and, dare one dream, Fallout 6, in the near future. Until then, of course, fans still need to busy themselves with something, and, fortunately, there is a lesser-known Fallout game that absolutely deserves your love. Indeed, this Fallout experience is one of a kind, a truly exceptional adaptation that’s getting a brand-new entry in the form of Wasteland Warfare in just a few months.
Fallout: Wasteland Warfare is the tabletop adaptation of the video games, although perhaps not in the way you’d expect. Sure, there have been great Fallout board games in the past, but Wasteland Warfare, with its highly detailed miniatures and expansive rule set, offers a truly detailed and deeply systemic experience that fans of the games will absolutely enjoy. In Wasteland Warfare, each player takes control of a warband and either fights one another, an AI-controlled enemy warband, or engages in long-running campaigns across the wasteland. The potential to tell any kind of story is built into Wasteland Warfare’s impressive rules.
Wasteland Warfare’s new solo mode further fulfills the fantasy of the video games, allowing anyone to grab a handful of figures and recreate the experience of playing on the small screen, albeit with physical, interactive components on their table. However, what fans of the game and newcomers alike should be focused on is the upcoming second edition of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare. As the game has been around since 2018, it is no surprise that developer Modiphius Entertainment would look to switch things up a little.
Fallout: Wasteland Warfare’s new second edition carries over everything that worked about the first, while incorporating new D&D-style features. That aforementioned solo mode is a big part of the second edition, as are longer campaigns, roleplaying, and co-operative play, all of which cater to players who wish to transport the video game experience to their tabletop. That’s not to say that the PvP component of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare isn’t a big part of its second edition rules, but rather that Modiphius has gone all in on making it ostensibly the next Fallout video game, just on your table.
It truly is the next best thing to play as you await the official Fallout 5 release date announcement. Wasteland Warfare is constantly expanding with new miniatures, rules, and campaigns, so it’s worth delving into it if you’ve somehow looked over it all these years. The second edition starter set for Fallout: Wasteland Warfare is expected to launch in February 2027, so fans won’t have long to wait until it drops. It’s worth keeping an eye on, though, especially if you’ve been lamenting the lack of Fallout games and want to fill that Fallout-shaped hole in your heart.
