A train collision in Egypt has left several people dead and more than 100 injured, drawing fresh attention to the country’s long-troubled rail system. Two trains crashed on Sunday, November 8, 2026, in the Al-Ayyat district of Giza governorate, south of Cairo, sending several carriages off the tracks. Egyptian authorities have launched a probe as rescue teams work to account for everyone caught in the wreckage.

Here’s what we know about the crash so far.

What Happened in the Egypt Train Crash?

The pileup happened when a train traveling from Giza to Fayoum slammed into the rear of a stationary train bound from Cairo to Aswan on the same track, according to the Associated Press. The impact threw several carriages off the rails, overturning some and crushing others. Riders were trapped inside the damaged coaches, and some aboard the stationary train were found dead when rescuers finally pulled them free.

How Many People Died in the Egypt Train Crash?

At least seven people were killed, and more than 100 others were hurt, according to Egypt’s Chief Prosecutor’s office. Officials said the train’s conductor was among the dead. Early figures had put the count at four dead and 88 wounded before authorities revised it upward as the day went on and crews reached riders pinned inside the stationary train’s carriages.

What Caused the Egypt Train Crash?

The exact cause remains under investigation. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said in a social media post that he ordered a prompt inquiry into the collision and called for those responsible to be held accountable. Prosecutors have begun questioning witnesses and injured passengers. Train wrecks are common in Egypt, where the rail network has a long history of mismanagement and poor maintenance, even as the government has spent billions of dollars trying to modernize it. A string of accidents in 2020 and 2021 killed and injured scores of people and fueled public anger over railway safety, and the country’s worst rail disaster came in 2002, when a fire aboard an overnight train killed more than 300 people.

Authorities have not yet pinned down what led to the collision, and the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
