“FPIs are major players in Indian equity markets and periods when they have aggressively sold coincided with market underperformance many a times,” said Sriram Velayudhan, senior vice president at IIFL Capital. “Even during times of far lesser quantum of selling, the gains have been limited.”
FPI sales of Rs 2.8 lakh crore in the last five months caused the Nifty to drop over 15%. Though these investors sold more between October 2021 and June 2022, the impact was lower.

“The declines are sharper this time around compared to the October 2021 to June 2022 period primarily due to valuations and a weak currency,” said Velayudhan. FPI holding in NSE-listed companies is at a decadal low of 16.6% on account of their selling while the retail holding is at a decadal high of 9.6%, Velayudhan added.
