A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is open to incorporating time jumps, which would especially affect the Game of Thrones prequel’s youngest character.
Averaging 26 million global viewers per episode in season 1, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a refreshing new spin on Game of Thrones. Set 90 years before Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms centers on the misadventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell).
The Playlist spoke to showrunner Ira Parker about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Currently in production, A Knight of The Seven Kingdoms season 2 is based on George R.R. Martin’s second Dunk and Egg novella, “The Sworn Sword,” which takes place about a year after season 1. Regarding Dexter Sol Ansell aging as Egg, Parker addresses how the series is open to using time jumps. Read his quote below:
Ira Parker: Dexter doesn’t have to be eight years old for a 10-season run. We want this to happen. There was a little bit of urgency, I think, going into season two because there’s only about a year, year and a half in between them. Season three, or book three, there is actually a pretty small jump. But it doesn’t kill us if it’s a little bit of a larger jump.
And there’s things in the book about Egg slowly having some hairs coming in there that he needs to get. And so it was already written in that he is getting to this next level of maturity. But yeah, look, I don’t know if you have kids, but my kids aren’t that old yet, but everyone tells me it’s around this age. It’s around 12, 13 where they make a jump. And so we know something’s coming.
Ira Parker previously revealed his ambitious hopes for 12 to 15 seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Although only three novellas have been published, Parker says George R.R. Martin has plotted out 10 Dunk and Egg stories, giving plenty of material for future A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms seasons.
Egg is about 9 years old in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1, and Dexter Sol Ansell turns 12 in September. Egg’s aging should roughly match its young actor’s, at least for the first three seasons. However, Parker has also hinted that future seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms would jump forward in Game of Thrones‘ timeline.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms‘ bold plan is to tell stories throughout the different eras of Dunk and Egg’s lives, including later seasons of the adult Egg becoming and reigning as King Aegon V Targaryen. While Peter Claffey is expected to portray Dunk throughout A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ prospective run, Egg may need to be recast as an adult if the series time jumps.
Dunk and Egg won’t change very much in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 from how audiences remember them in season 1. In the second season, Dunk and Egg will be in the Reach, caught up in a power play between new characters played by Lucy Boynton, Peter Mullan, and Babou Ceesay. A small time jump will then happen before A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 3.
