- A new free-to-play Borderlands game has launched on mobile
- Zynga calls Borderlands Mobile a “limited-time test” for iPhone
- The game is only available in the US at this time
Out of nowhere and with little fanfare, Zynga has launched a brand new free-to-play Borderlands game for mobile.
Borderlands Mobile was suddenly published by the mobile game company on Thursday this week, somewhat randomly, and is developed by Star Wars: Hunters studio, NaturalMotion.
The spin-off game, which Zynga is calling a “limited-time test,” doesn’t have a fancy title and is currently only available on the App Store for iPhone users in the US. I tried downloading the game in the UK, but encountered a region lock issue.

“We are always exploring ways to introduce Borderlands to new audiences,” a Zynga spokesperson said in a statement to IGN.
“Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio is currently conducting a limited-time test for an untitled Borderlands mobile project, with Gearbox providing creative guidance on the franchise’s design, history, and lore. We hope that players enjoy this new Borderlands experience and look forward to their feedback.”
No trailer or gameplay has been shared for Borderlands Mobile at this time, but from the screenshots on the App Store, it does appear to feature characters from the broader Borderlands franchise, such as Tiny Tina, Moxxi, a Psycho, and Claptrap.
We do know that the game is an “action-packed looter shooter” like previous Borderlands games, features Vault Hunters, and “brings the signature chaos, art style, and gun-slinging adventure to mobile for the first time!”
“Hunt down legendary loot drops and power up your abilities to customize the way you play,” the description reads. “Use everything from pistols to rocket launchers to make your enemies wish they never crossed your path! Master devastating action gameplay that’s been fully optimized for mobile. Fight skags, bandits, and bosses as you battle through a variety of exciting mission types, including Campaign Missions, Tower of Terror, and Circle of Slaughter.”
We’ll have to wait and see if the game remains live and if it spreads to Android devices as well as other regions.
