‘Adventure Time’s Best Couple Is Officially Getting Their Own Fantastical Special [Exclusive]

Do you know what time it is? It’s officially Pride Month and also the anniversary of Ooo’s greatest romance — Bubbline. In celebration of the occasion, Eisner and Harvey Award-winning publisher Oni Press has joined forces with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products to explore new ground within the Adventure Time universe through their first-ever Pride Special, centered on Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen. Titled PB & Marcy’s Infinite Mixtape #1, this new 40-page comic will see their relationship put to the test as they aim to make the ultimate monument to their love — a perfect, never-before-heard mixtape that reflects everything they’ve been through until now. Collider is thrilled to offer an extended preview of the new original story before it hits store shelves this month, including ten pages and four unique covers with wildly different styles.

Each cover from PB & Marcy’s Infinite Mixtape offers a reimagining of the titular couple, whether in a comic-appropriate style that pops off the page or in something more abstract or downright unrecognizable from the show. Above all else, they convey three things: the enduring love of these characters, stemming back to the series finale, the importance of music in their lives, and the rough patch they endure in their walk down memory lane. The comic follows the Scream Queens after the creation of their new mixtape forces them to reflect and realize that the fond memories they share aren’t as rosy as they remember. Helping capture the energy of this new adventure and pay homage to the original zaniness of Adventure Time with these rocking and wildly creative covers are four skilled creators led by interior artist Evengia Vereli, alongside Chan (Plague House), Jaki King (KISMET), and Mary Ainza (Legendary Ninja of Feudal Japan).

Within the actual pages, we see that Bonnie and Marcy aren’t just remembering past moments of their relationship, but reliving them in real time. This snippet from the story begins in their room, where the duo is using their love as inspiration to make sweet music to win the Pride Ooopen Mic Battle of the Bands. Alas, despite their best efforts, they stink at coming up with new songs, to the point where PB wonders if being so happy together has killed their creative spark. That’s when she stumbles upon an unfinished mixtape she never gave Marceline, which is filled with tracks based on specific memories, like their trip to a diner, which Marcy calls the “worst date of all time,” and a campaign for a special date the Vampire Queen designed after her favorite Victorian novella. Venturing through these little moments, both mundane and fantastical, sparks a bit of bickering between the two lovebirds as they realize all the problems and differences in how fondly they initially recalled their time together, which will ultimately force them to question if, perhaps, they’re just out of tune.

‘Adventure Time’s First Pride Special Was Made By a Longtime Fan

While Vereli provided the adorable art for PB & Marcy’s Infinite Mixtape, the story itself was written by Rosie Knight. Knight has an impressive resume to her name, working as a journalist with well over 2,500 bylines and as a co-host of the pop culture podcast X-Ray Vision. Before getting the chance to enter the Land of Ooo, she’s also previously tackled Godzilla, penning the comics Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Battra and Godzilla Monster Island Summer Camp, which is due out on August 20, in addition to other projects on the page. This isn’t Vereli’s first time drawing Bubbline, previously working on a cover for a reprint of Adventure Time: The Bubbline College Special #1, but this new comic was a more expansive opportunity to rock out with two beloved characters like never before.

In an official statement, Knight expressed how important Adventure Time was to her and how much of an honor it was to give one of the most groundbreaking love stories in cartoons a strange, surreal twist befitting the original show by Pendleton Ward. Of course, it helped to have Vereli as her partner for the sweet little project, as it explored Bubbline and even paid homage to a classic villain from Ooo.

So I’m honored to get to team up with the unbelievably talented Evgenia to add our own very gay and very strange twist on everyone’s favorite healing situationship.
