Amazon’s Sequel to the Greatest Sci-Fi Parody Ever Made Just Unveiled Its First Footage and Official Title

[

The search for more money kicks off next year when Spaceballs 2, the sequel to Mel Brooks‘ riotous 1987 Star Wars spoof, invades theaters. And now, thanks to Amazon MGM Studios’ presentation at CinemaCon, we have our first glimpse of the film and its long-awaited title, which may not be what you’re expecting. Collider’s own Schwartz-sensitive Britta DeVore was on the scene in Las Vegas.

The crowd at CinemaCon ate up every second of the Spaceballs 2 trailer as a narrator traced the journey of the sequel’s path from rumor to screen. While no plot was spelled out in any way, shape, or form, we got to see what the creative team has been cooking up with numerous icons returning to their fan-favorite roles after more than three decades. Of course, the original film doesn’t have that much of a plot, either, so this one should fit in just fine. We also now know that the sequel will be titled Spaceballs: The New One; “just like the old one, but it’s newer.” The original film teased that the sequel would be called Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, which Brooks joked about in a video message; it no longer bears that title because he found the money.

What Do We Know About ‘Spaceballs: The New One’?

A belated sequel to the 1987 film, Spaceballs: The New One sees the return of Winnebago-flying rogue Lone Starr (Bill Pullman), his feisty paramour Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga), and the sagacious Yogurt (Brooks), as well as the sinister forces of Planet Spaceball, including President Skroob (also Brooks), Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner), and the menacing Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis, in his first live-action screen appearance since 1997). New additions to the cast include Lewis Pullman, Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan, and Josh Gad; while character details have yet to be released, presumably Lewis Pullman is playing the son of Lone Starr.

Spaceballs: The New One is directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar), from a script by Brooks, Gad and screenwriting duo Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who wrote Detective Pikachu. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody are producing alongside Gad, Brooks, and Greenbaum. It’s Gad’s second stab at reviving a Brooks property, after his well-received History of the World: Part II miniseries on Hulu.

Spaceballs: The New One will hit theaters on April 23, 2027. Stay tuned to Collider all week for the latest CinemaCon coverage.
