- Apple has launched a limited-edition wearable pocket for your iPhone
- It’s designed in collaboration with Issey Miyake
- It starts at $149.95 / £139.95
If you’re not happy keeping your iPhone in a bag or one of the pockets built into your clothes then Apple might now have the product for you, as it has just unveiled the ‘iPhone Pocket’.
This has been designed in collaboration with Issey Miyake – the designer of Steve Jobs’ iconic turtleneck – and it’s essentially a knitted pouch that you can keep your iPhone in.
Amusingly it was apparently inspired by the concept of “a piece of cloth”, but it’s a lot more expensive than you might expect a piece of cloth to be, coming in at $149.95 / £139.95 if you want it with a short strap, or $229.95 / £219.95 for a long strap, and with no Australian availability.
That makes this one pocket more expensive than my entire outfit, and my jeans have four pockets in them, which is suddenly seeming like a bit of a bargain. So I won’t be buying this, but then it’s probably not for me.
Stylish, colorful, and an easy target
It does at least look quite nice, with the design apparently allowing it to fully enclose around any iPhone, and expanding to fit other items too. It’s also somewhat versatile since you can wear it in a variety of ways – such as across your body, tied to a bag, or simply held.
The iPhone Pocket is available in a variety of colors too, with the short strap version being sold in lemon, mandarin, purple, pink, peacock, sapphire, cinnamon, and black, while the version with a long strap can be had in just sapphire, cinnamon, and black.
So this could make sense for fashion fans, and especially those who often wear pocketless clothing. It’s limited edition too, which might add to the allure. Though it’s not clear how limited it will be.
Still, aside from being very expensive for what’s essentially a glorified pouch, it also might not be the most secure accessory – wear this and you’re basically advertising that it houses an iPhone, at least to any fashion-conscious thieves, and since it doesn’t have a zip or button to more securely close it, the iPhone Pocket might end up being an easy target for pickpockets.
But if you do still want one, you’ll be able to order it from November 14 at Apple’s online store, or you can pick one up from select retail locations, such as the Apple Store on Regent Street in London, and the one in SoHo, New York.
