Apple TV’s Returning Sci-Fi Is Officially Changing The Rules Of Book Adaptations

Apple TV is the streaming home of a compelling sci-fi show that is completely changing the rules of book adaptations with its upcoming season. In Apple TV’s ever-growing sci-fi catalog, the show in question remains relatively obscure compared to mainstream titles like Silo, For All Mankind, and Severance. However, it earned enough critical acclaim and commercial numbers in season 1 to return for another installment.

The show, Dark Matter, holds a Rotten Tomatoes score of 81% and was praised for its ability to creatively keep audiences glued to their screens with compelling twists and turns. While many viewers and critics pointed out that Dark Matter struggled to rise above familiar genre tropes, its mind-bending sci-fi elements were enough to make it a hit on Apple TV.

Interestingly, in season 2, Apple TV’s Dark Matter seems to be treading a unique path and changing how book adaptations are usually approached. This approach seems risky, but it could also potentially help the Apple TV sci-fi show etch a more distinct identity for itself in season 2, which is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV on August 28, 2026.

Dark Matter Season 2 Will Expand Blake Crouch’s Original Book’s Story

Almost all on-screen adaptations of books are packed with creative liberties. However, only a few end up continuing even after they exhaust their source material’s story. Apple TV’s Dark Matter is seemingly doing the same in season 2. In its first installment, the Apple TV sci-fi show has already exhausted almost all story beats from its source material.

From walking through the rules surrounding its central sci-fi plot devices to introducing some of the most mind-bending multiversal tropes from the books, Dark Matter season 1 walks through it all. Beyond that, the show also makes good use of its long runtime to give more screen time to characters who seem relatively more irrelevant in the original book.

Apple TV’s Dark Matter also features a bizarre set of alternate worlds in its early moments to fascinate viewers with its exploration of the multiverse. Since the show’s season 1 does enough from a narrative standpoint and also ends on a fairly conclusive note, it did not have to return for another season.

Owing to this, it is hard not to be curious about where its sci-fi story will go in the upcoming installment. While extending the original book’s story beyond its natural ending can prove to be risky, the Apple TV sci-fi show heavily benefits from the fact that the original book’s author, Blake Crouch, is also its showrunner.

Blake Crouch Is Among the First Few Authors To Create A TV Sequel to His Own Novel

A book adaptation going well beyond its source material is rare but not unheard of. However, an author extending his own original bestselling book through a television series is incredibly rare. Blake Crouch is among the few authors to achieve this feat as he is getting the opportunity to expand his own book’s lore through Dark Matter season 2.

Many shows struggle and go completely off the rails once they attempt to stretch their stories beyond their source material. However, Dark Matter will likely avoid the same mistake as it is in the safe hands of its original book’s author.

Even in the Apple TV show’s season 1, Crouch carefully set up original story beats and developed side characters to ensure he would have enough stories to tell in Dark Matter season 2. While only time will tell whether the upcoming season will be as good as its predecessor, the Apple TV show seems to have the potential to get even better as it progresses.
