Attack On Titan Meets A Quiet Place In 2026’s Highly-Anticipated Sci-Fi Thriller

[

An exciting sci-fi thriller is set to premiere in 2026, and it comes off as the perfect blend of story beats from Attack on Titan and A Quiet Place. 2026 has already been an incredible year for movies from many diverse genres. While horror hits like Backrooms and Obsession have proven the genre’s reach and scope, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is all set to shatter many box office records.

However, since we are only halfway through the year, many promising flicks from myriad genres are set to hit the big and small screens. While some of these movies in question have been helmed by popular American directors, a few others hail from other parts of the world. Falling in the latter category, director Na Hong-jin’s Hope is one of the most anticipated movies of the year.

With a solid line of work that includes highly acclaimed movies like The Wailing and The Yellow Sea, Na Hong-jin has consistently proven his ability to deliver some of the grittiest and most atmospheric thrillers in modern South Korean cinema. He is expected to pull off something similar with Hope, which seems reminiscent of Attack on Titan and A Quiet Place in more ways than one.

Na Hong-jin’s Hope Seems Like A Combination Of Attack On Titan & A Quiet Place

Hope’s premise reveals that it follows a police chief, a policewoman and a group of hunters who set out to track a mysterious creature in a South Korean village. However, when the movie’s trailer actually reveals the central creatures, they seem to closely resemble live-action versions of the titans from Attack on Titan. They are massive and have humanoid appearances with disturbingly exaggerated facial features and elongated limbs.

Some scenes from the trailer also hint that instead of being mindless monsters, the creatures also misunderstood beings like the Titans in Attack on Titan. One sequence in particular shows smaller versions of the creatures, establishing how they, too, have a sense of community like humans and there is more to them than meets the eye.

The themes of survival in the upcoming movie seem reminiscent of A Quiet Place where the characters will seemingly be cut off from the rest of the world while navigating the central threat. Like the Quiet Place movies, Hope will feature little military involvement in its setting. Instead, it will follow a ragtag group of out-of-their-depth individuals who will struggle to contain the threat with their limited resources.

Given how Na Hong-jin’s movies are known to take unexpected tonal and narrative turns as they progress, Hope‘s parallels with Attack on Titan and A Quiet Place may only be surface-level. As it progresses, the movie could go in unpredictable directions, allowing it to stand out among other mainstream survival thrillers.

What Hope’s Early Reviews Reveal About The Exciting Sci-Fi Epic

Hope premiered at the main competition of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2026. Following its early release, the movie has a critics’ score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes with a total of 41 reviews. While 78% is, by no means, a bad score, it is a little underwhelming compared to Na Hong-jin’s other hits. It must be noted, though, that the score could significantly go up once the film gets a worldwide release.

The early praise surrounding the movie revolves around its direction, practical action, and compelling performances. Even its scale and production design have earned wide appreciation. However, the main points of contrition revolve around the movie’s uncanny CGI and creature designs. Some have even expressed frustration surrounding the movie’s focus on setting up sequels instead of resolving underlying mysteries.

While these shortcomings could hold Hope back from becoming as iconic as Attack on Titan and A Quiet Place, it seems to hold immense potential. Over time, as the sci-fi franchise expands, viewers and critics might even grow to appreciate the scale of its story and VFX choices.
