Beast of Reincarnation: How to Manage Hunger Meter & Cook

[

Beast of Reincarnation has a hunger meter for its two protagonists, but it may not be immediately obvious how to manage or even see it. An odd tutorial choice may have left you confused about how to keep Emma and Koo well-fed and in their best fighting conditions.

Game Freak’s first big non-Pokémon game is out now, and it’s a huge departure from the studio’s previous works. The game follows Emma and Koo through a post-apocalyptic Japan. Together, they must fight animals and androids that have been corrupted by a mysterious blight that seems to have nature reclaiming the world. The game has many traditional open-world RPG elements, including a hunger meter, cooking, and plant cultivating. Here’s what you need to know.

How To See Your Hunger Meter In Beast Of Reincarnation

Beast of Reincarnation tips you off pretty early on that Emma and Koo have hunger meters. Both characters get hungry as time goes on and as they complete actions like fighting and dashing. As long as their hunger meter isn’t completely depleted, their HP will slowly regenerate. Get too hungry, and the HP regen stops completely, leaving you more vulnerable to attacks.

The problem is, the tutorial appears before the hunger meter actually becomes available to see. This may leave you a bit confused about hunger and its relation to HP, as well as how to handle both.

The hunger meter only appears after the flashback sequence where Emma meets Koo. After that, their hunger level will be indicated by a little circle with a grain icon, located to the left of Emma’s health circle and to the right of Koo’s. The hunger meter starts at a light brown and turns red and empties out as hunger increases. A pop-up indicator also appears, so you don’t accidentally miss it.

How To Keep Emma And Koo Well-Fed On Their Adventure

The effects of hunger in Beast of Reincarnation aren’t too horrible compared to some other games. Still, losing your health regeneration can be a big problem for your adventure, so here’s how to keep Emma and Koo from getting too hungry as they travel.

Every time you leave your Cleanse Walker, your pack automatically refills with field rations, hard candy, and Koo treats. You’ll also find ingredients as you travel around the land, which Koo will at times helpfully point out. The most common ingredients you’ll find at first are fish and meat, as well as rice and soya beans.

Although there’s no fishing in Beast of Reincarnation, you can find and collect fish near streams, ponds, and other sources of water.

Raw ingredients must be cooked before they can be consumed. Approaching a campfire auto-cooks any ingredients in your pack, making them available to eat (press down on the d-pad) while out in the field. This basic method of cooking is the only one available until you get further into the story, so make sure to pick up any food items you find lying around.

How To Cook In Beast Of Reincarnation

Once you get far enough into the story—specifically with the character Kagura—you’ll unlock a more advanced form of cooking. Kagura will cook up meals for Emma and Koo in the Cleanse Walker, using ingredients and recipes you collect on your adventures.

Recipes can be found in books throughout the land, and higher levels can be unlocked by fighting enemies. Cooking and consuming a meal in your home base will not just heal you and refill your hunger meter, but it will also add permanent buffs to your stats based on which meal and recipe level you select.

As you get further in the game, you’ll also gain the ability to grow your own food in the Grow Chamber inside the Cleanse Walker from seedlings you find as you explore. You’ll also be able to keep chickens in the Cleanse Walkers Incubator, which will keep you stocked up on eggs for all your meal-making needs.

But until you unlock cooking, you’ll have to remember to scrounge around for raw materials to keep Emma and her canine companion fed. Eventually, Kagura will assist Emma with all the cooking and plant-tending tasks while she’s out and about in the overworld, so you can focus on continuing your adventures in Beast of Reincarnation.
