I’ve covered everything you need to check in my guide How to choose the best office chair for you.
But here are the main features I recommend checking before committing to any office chair this Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Design
The two main options here are mid-back and high-back office chairs. Mid-back models like the Branch Verve or FlexiSpot Sheer offer support the lower back up to the shoulders, and offer more freedom to move. High-back chairs offer full spinal support including the neck and shoulders, and while movement can be more restricted, I recommend them for workers sitting all day.
Material
The choice here is fabric or mesh. Fabric is good for soft, padded comfort. Mesh is good for firm support and all-day breathability. Which you choose depends on your preference.
You may see some deals on office chairs that are faux leather (sometimes called PU leather or leatherette). I would recommend avoiding these in general, as they lack the breathability of a fabric or mesh chair.
Lumbar support
There are three types of lumbar support to choose here. Fixed lumbar support remains in a single position, and is ideal if you’re of average height. Adjustable lumbar support is better all-round, and can be raised and lowered, or even moved backwards and forwards for a more tailored fit for a range of body types. Dynamic lumbar support is the best pick, as it delivers continued support as you shift in your seat.
Ultra-cheap office chairs often have no lumbar support at all, and are best avoided.
Armrests
Most office chair deals have 2D, 3D, or 4D armrests – this determines the number of directions the armrests can be angled (up, down, backward, forward, inward, outward).
Adjustments
This is arguably the most important features to look for when getting a chair that offers a tailored fit. Alongside lumbar support, a good office chair will also offer the ability to adjust the seat height and depth, to ensure you’re sitting correctly and properly supported. Lockable recline and tilt are standard on most chairs, but check the specs to be sure. Also check that the headrest, if included, can be adjusted or angled for better neck support, too.
Below, I’ve created a table to check what height your chair should reach depending on your height.
Price and value
An office chair is an investment – even if it’s in a Black Friday deal. In my experience, the cheapest Black Friday office chair deals don’t necessarily equal good value for money. Not only do they often lack core features essential for comfort and support, but build quality is usually lower and they can be prone to squeaks and creaks during use.
Where possible, opt for a chair from a brand reviewed by me or my team so you know what to expect. For budget and mid-range chair deals, look at companies like Boulies, FlexiSpot, and Sihoo. At the premium end, Branch, Vari, Friska, Herman Miller, Steelcase all offer great, stylish chairs with long warranties. For gaming and office chairs, Secretlab, Razer, and Corsair all get my vote.
