Netflix is home to one of the best high-fantasy TV series of all time, and it’s a perfect combination of the world of Brandon Sanderson and that of J. R. R. Tolkien. Netflix now stands out mostly for its original content, and through its TV shows, it has explored a variety of genres and styles. Many of Netflix’s original productions now rank among the best TV shows of all time, and some of them are also some of the best fantasy shows in recent years.

Why The Dragon Prince Is One Of The Best Fantasy TV Shows Of All Time

The Dragon Prince takes the audience to the continent of Xadia, where magic exists and comes from six primal sources: the Moon, Sky, Sun, Earth, Ocean, and the Stars. Dragons, elves, and humans used to coexist in Xadia, but when the humans began to practice dark magic, as they were unable to use primal magic naturally, conflict began between these three groups. As a result, Xadia was split into two: one half inhabited by humans, and the other by dragons and elves.

Centuries later, human King Harrow of Katolis and his advisor Lord Viren killed Avizandum, the Archdragon of the Sky, and stole the egg of his unborn heir, who is the title Dragon Prince. Their goal is to use the egg to harvest dark magic, with the rest of the world believing that the egg was destroyed. When Moonshadow Elf assassins go after Harrow and his son, Crown Prince Ezran, to avenge Avizandum’s death, assassin Rayla confronts Ezran and his elder half-brother, Prince Callum.

Together, they discover that the egg wasn’t destroyed and is, in fact, intact, and so they team up to take it back to Xadia to stop the conflict once and for all. The Dragon Prince ran for seven seasons, ending in 2024, and it’s now widely regarded as one of the best animated shows of all time, as well as one of the best fantasy series. The Dragon Prince has been praised for its concept, worldbuilding, stories, and character development.

The Dragon Prince has complexity and depth that animated fantasy shows sometimes forget in favor of action and other elements, making the Netflix show one of the most complete and fascinating fantasy series of all time.

The World Of The Dragon Prince Isn’t Over Yet

The Dragon Prince ended in 2024 after seven seasons (and a long wait of three years between seasons three and four), but that wasn’t the end of this universe. Despite The Dragon Prince’s finale offering an overall satisfying conclusion, it does leave some loose threads that make way for an expansion. Luckily for fans of The Dragon Prince, there’s more to explore in this universe and a sequel series is now in development.

The project, appropriately titled The Dragon King, was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2025, and it will be set seven years after the ending of The Dragon Prince. At the time of writing, there’s no projected release date for The Dragon King nor any more updates on its development, but hopefully, it will continue its process without any obstacles and will be released soon. Until then, there’s plenty of time to either revisit or watch The Dragon Prince for the first time.
